The George Shearing Quintet And Orchestra "Black Satin" 思わずこのジャケットの女性の視線に誘われてしまいました。しかもオリジナル盤！ #CapitolRecords レーベル。 Arranged By - #BillyMay , #GeorgeShearing 第2次世界大戦前後にかけて、イギリスで録音を開始したジョージ・シアリングは瞬く間にイギリスナンバーワンのピアニストに。そして戦後アメリカから来たミュージシャンに度々誘われ、アメリカ・ニューヨークへ移住。1955年にキャピトル・レコードに移籍、本作はアメリカに帰化した1956年の作品。残念ながら録音年月日が不明ですが、Capitalに限らずヴォーカル作品を手掛ける大手のレコード会社のアルバムには録音データ不明が多いですね。本作、シアリング･クインテットとビリー・メイ指揮のオーケストラが共演したゴージャスかつ優美なアルバムで｢黒いドレスの美女ジャケ｣として大人気盤。軽いラテン・タッチのSide 1-2"If I Should Lose You"や切々と胸を打つバラッドなど、ソフトなタッチで美しくエレガントに演奏。録音評ですが... 当時のCapital自慢のStereo Hi-Fi Recording。ネットではMONO盤が多いようですが。決して悪くはないのですが、特筆するような音質ではありません。楽器の音色や分解能などあまりクリアではありません。Capitalレーベルはヴォーカルでは、素晴らしい録音もあるので、これはちょっと残念.... 。Capitalスタジオでの録音なのでしょうか... 。エンジニアも誰なのでしょうか... 。あえてSumico Pearlにしてみましたが、Shure SC35Cの方が温かみや円みが出て、良いかも。演奏と楽曲に関しては、いわゆるモダン・ジャズではない、クラシック音楽的なオーケストラ・ジャズ、まるでヴォーカルが入りそうな雰囲気で、カラオケみたい。盤イチは、Side 2-3 "One Moning In May" 、シアリングのエレガントな世界に引き込まれ寛げる曲。シアリングの評判について... 本作のような彼のクインテットのよりコマーシャルなサウンドと彼の才能には当時、ジャズ・ジャーナリズムの態度は冷淡だったそう... 。ルイ・アームストロングやデューク・エリントンでさえもが、ショウビジネスへ迎合したと不興を買ったらしい... 。50年～60年代の評論家の方々は、ジャズに生きながらもあまりにも経済的に成功することに我慢がならず、アーティストは成功すればするほどコマーシャルになったと非難されたらしい... 。逆に解釈すれば、シアリングは視力を失った代わりにその羨ましいほどの才能があったと言うこと。まるで多国語を流暢に話すことのできる才能のよう、言葉の代わりに、スイング、ビバップ、ラテン、クラシックを問わず、彼の想像力を刺激するものなら何でも、自分のピアノの鍵盤にも譜面の上に容易に写し取ることができると。また、彼のクインテットは50年代のラテンジャズを牽引したとも言われているそうです。同時にシアリングの洗練された音楽性はポピュラー音楽という見方もされることが多く、60年代まではジャズファンからはそれほど注目を浴びなかったそうです。彼の作曲の才では、｢バードランドの子守歌｣はそのクラブに出演したアーティストにとって、礼儀上不可欠な演奏曲目となっただけではなく、いつの時代でも最も頻繁に演奏されるジャズ・スタンダードの傑作。最後に、インタビューによると特に影響を受けたピアニストはアート・テイタムで、ソロピアノにおいて｢完璧なピアニスト｣だと。電子楽器に関しては否定的で｢個性や音質、ピアニスティックなアプローチを剥ぎ取る｣と言い、例えば、チック・コリアやハービー・ハンコックについては電子楽器によるプレイよりも初期のピアノの作品を評価しているそうです。 #jazz #fuzey #vinyl #jazzvinyl #vinylcollection #ジャズ #スイングジャーナル #レコード *作品を知るとジャズはもっと輝きます。情報くださる先輩諸氏に感謝。 https://www.instagram.com/p/CG_cJVHJDZA/?igshid=9hfbw5e644us
