“i’m fine, it’s just a flesh wound, i’ll be okay.”
He’s probably said that at least four times, and each time the effect has been the same; which is to say it has had none at all. He’s right though, he’ll be right as rain as soon as Chakwas returns with the medi-gel. It wasn’t like her stupid mistake had caused any permanent damage, or rattled his amp, or triggered some kind of complex migraine, but even so… she felt like shit.
She’s also… pacing, isn’t she? Ugh. No wonder he keeps trying to reassure her of his condition. Absently bitting at her nails, Shepard can scarcely meet his eye, let alone respond to his assertions. Was this how he felt when she took the hit from the beacon on Eden Prime? No, he probably felt much worse. After all, she’d been unconcious, and he’d had to carry her back to the ship.
It’s just… she’d lost it, a little, when that sonuvabitch started talking about Elysium (and then proceeded to trap them in an underground cavern with a nuclear device set to detonate). And… that moment, when Kaidan had fallen out of her sight, when she had pushed too far out and he, right beside her, had taken a hit and summarily hit the ground - it had felt strangely like the moment on Elysium when Russ had, too, fallen out of sight. Only she’d never seen him alive again. The shock of her deja vu was enough to bring her out of her haze, finish that would-be pirate king off, and get the team back on the Normandy with remarkable efficiency.
And now they’re back. Safe and sound. She hears Chakwas approaching, and part of her knows that she should just leave, and yet… the thought of losing sight of him again quite simply terrifies her. So she’ll stay, she decides, just until the doctor says he’s okay.
