After discovering this poor thrush had been brought in by their cat, the owners quickly rang us for advice. Arriving, later, at the centre for an examination by the vet team, this garden bird had sustained a wound to its right side. Luckily, the wound was superficial and Maru was able to stitch it back together, nicely. As with all cat attack victims, the thrush was given a dose of antibiotics to prevent any potential infection caused by the bacteria in the cat's saliva. When it arrived at the centre, just a few weeks ago, this magpie was unable to fly. An X-ray revealed that this feisty bird had a fracture to its left clavicle and, after an examination, Maru also found it to be rather malnourished. In order for the clavicle to heal properly, the magpie was placed on cage rest for two weeks and prescribed a course of painkillers, to help with any pain. Over the resting period, this plucky character managed to gain a good amount of weight and the fracture healed well; after a fortnight, the bird was in great condition. This long-tailed tit was brought in to the centre after being caught by a cat. Although it was still bright and responsive, Maru was worried about internal damage and took it straight in for an X-ray. Sadly, the X-ray confirmed that the bird had a broken coracoid but, luckily, this could be treated with cage rest and careful handling. It is now on a course of both antibiotics and painkillers, and is recuperating in one of our pens.
