Whilst storm Ciara is all over the news for the destruction of property and infrastructure, it's also having quite the effect on our wildlife... This young robin was blown out of its nest during the peak of the winds and sadly, despite efforts, the nest could no longer be located. Whilst uninjured and bright, it is still far too young to survive on its own. This youngster now becomes the second young garden bird of 2020 with many more set to arrive over the coming weeks and months. Our strimmer-injury hedgehog is, finally, fully recovered! From the horrible wound we started with, it's amazing to see how quickly this little guy has healed and, now, you'd never know the injury had even been there! We don't often see adult dunnocks here at WAF. However, this little bird was brought in after it was found on the ground, struggling to fly. During an examination, Maru found the bird to be extremely underweight but, luckily, uninjured! PLEASE pick up your litter! This hedgehog was rushed in to the centre this morning with a plastic bottle ring stuck fast around his neck. Although we were able to cut the ring off quickly, the resulting constriction damage was horrific, with deep wounds around the neck and significant swelling on the head and belly. Maru, our lead vet, was able to clean the wounds and suture a special hydrocolloid dressing in place to aid healing, but this will be a long process... Please share this post. Britain's smallest bird! This tiny goldcrest was caught by a cat before being brought into the centre for help. Although it had not been injured, it was covered in saliva and needed a cleanup and antibiotic treatment to avoid the risk of bacterial infection. This tiny fox was rescued by Ron, one of our volunteers, after a member of the public noticed she had a pronounced limp. She was quite thin and seemed to be struggling. On closer inspection back at the hospital, Maru found a small wound on her front paw and swelling to the ligament of one back leg. Luckily, these are both treatable and the fox is currently on a course of treatment and worming. This poor tawny owl was the victim of an RTC, or road traffic collision, and was rushed into the centre for aid. Sadly, the impact of the car had caused massive damage to its left eye, leaving irreparable damage to the internal structures. As the injury would be causing a considerable amount of discomfort, our vet team made the decision to perform an evisceration procedure - the removal of the eye whilst leaving the external structures intact. This would ensure the delicate facial disk (crucial for concentrating sounds to the ears) would be undamaged - a vital consideration in a wild owl. Tawny owls rely mostly on sound, rather than sight, for hunting and research has shown them to adapt very well to a missing or damaged eye.
