"Nunca le digas a nadie, a nadie, que fui yo quién te dejó, porque yo nunca te hubiera dejado, nunca, porque eres muy fácil de querer..."
Totalitarian Ethnocentric Government Established in Ethiopia
It was believed that from the beginning Melese and his clique have been looking a ways to annihilate and humiliate the opposition to get them to withdraw from the election. Wayane had to do two things in order to win the fake election. First, Melese had to incarcerate Birtukan, and second, TPLF’s security forces had to harass and beat to death the opposition groups every where in the remote areas. If Melese allowed a free and fair election in Ethiopia, unequivocally his power would be threatened once in for all. Melese, once he threw Birtukan in jail, he turned his attention to the opposition leaders. Of course, Melese knew that Hailu Shawel and Birtukan Mideksa would be formidable opponents. Sad enough, Hailu Shawel was outsmarted by Meleses’ strategy, and Hailu wrongly believed that the 2005 election will come again with a big surprise. As a result, Hailu’s high spirit of winning the next election, he made an agreement to sign the so called code of conduct, which was deliberately orchestrated by Melese. Meleses’ big fear was if these two party’s leaders campaign and win the election, it was inevitable that Wayane was going to rig the election, and the 2005 mass murdered would repeat again. Melese, however, tried to forestall the ramifications of the election, and he wanted to shield himself from international communities and being the one blamed. Funny enough, Hailu Shawel did not think astutely and wisely to sign the code of conduct. Albeit, after he signed the agreement, he had still an opportunity to boycott the election. I am not still sure whether Hailu understood Meleses’ trick or not. Aftermath, Hailu regretted and resigned from leadership of his party. To me, it was a kind of embarrassing and he lost his credential amongst his supporters. I would not be surprised if Melese betrayed his good buddy, Lidetu Ayalew. Lidetu did not learn a lesson from TPLF veterans, Siye Abraha who was in prison for about 6 years by Melese Zenawi. Melese used Lidetu to dismantle Kinjit, and Lidetu did not even vacillate to join the TPLF’s parliament while the opposition leaders were in prison. Actually, Siye was the one who brought Melese to power. After he played all these games, Melese, officially claimed that his Awera party EPRDF, won 99.6% of the parliamentary seats. Aftermath, we have seen Melese reshuffling his cabinets recently to divert the attention of the people to prove his ethnic dominant groups are not in high government positions, but in reality they are in such positions. Melese has removed veteran Seyoum Mesfin and replaced Hailemariam Dessalegn who is from the southern ethnic minority. It is good, but it is just a show. I am not sure if Hailemariam has adequate experience for this job. Being loyal to the boss and taking a big sensitive position are different. Meleses’ priority is to maintain his power and divide and rule of the country; education does not matter to Wayane. It is unprecedented any where in the world that a high school teacher becomes Minster of Education. That is what a dictator does. This is clearly a drama put on by Melese changing Tigeran from the key government position to show the Ethiopian people that Ethiopian is not being run by TPLF ethnic minority groups, and he tries to deceive western donors and try to make them think he is a democratic leader. If we scrutinize the cabinet change, the prominent half Eritreans, Tigray born are still behind Melese. A little surprise Melese did was that to replace Sebehat Nega by his wife, because Sebehat is too old. Sebehat still could be on the job. He is not a senile and is still able to run the big Wayane’s company. Melese and Sebehat have a lot in common on an Eritrean issues, and when the time comes, they both are responsible for what they did to the Ethiopian people. Melese maintains and depends on three things to stay in power: security, military, and finance. Dictators believe that military control is the ultimate option to stay in power for a long time. Melese has to learn from the Derg. We have seen many dictators not benefit by using military forces against its own people. True power is in the people, not military control and strength. I am glad Birtukan was released. Birtukan is the first women and one of the first young, charismatic opposition leaders in Ethiopia. Birtukan was being held in solitary confinement in a windowless room. She really suffered a lot. Birtukan was born and grew up in Addis Ababa, and could not tolerate the TPLF’s brutal punishment. It was clear for every one, that Wayane knew Birtukan is capable of galvanizing the young people to come to the ballot. Wayane threw Birtukan in jail until the election was over. Melese spoke at Columbia University and said Birtukan will be released if she apologizes to the authority. Obviously, the apology letter was prepared by the Wayane. The apology letter was written to humiliate her and to demoralize her and her supporters to destroy her political aspirations.
