Summary:

I’ve fallen into the Modern AU spiral too and I have to say, it’s cozy here. I'm loving it. This story has been floating around in my head for a while, but the pieces of the plot only really started coming together in my slightly chaotic brain a few weeks ago. So, here we are. I’m really happy to finally share this!

I promise there is a plot. Involving true crime and some spy-story vibes.

Excerpt from Chapter 1 "Cry baby" under the cut.

------------------------------ The corners of his mouth lift a little higher now—friendly, polite. “Were you looking for something in particular?”

Ellana averts her gaze, letting it drift to the shelf of books behind his shoulder.

“No, just…”

Just something that’ll make me feel something, for fuck’s sake.

“…just something with feeling.”

He nods, not unkindly. “Feeling such as? Joy? Grief? Love?”

She lets out a breath. Almost a laugh.

“It doesn’t matter.”

He studies her for a moment, eyes flicking quickly over her face from beneath his glasses. She can almost swear she sees his pupils tracing the lines of her Vallaslin. But the moment is too brief to be sure.

For a second, she fears he’s recognised her. Maybe from one of the posters—those damn posters with her face plastered across them. She saw them through the bus window. Saw them and felt bile rise in her throat, looked away quickly, trying not to linger on the sight of her skin flattened by cruel post-production.

Gone were the wrinkles. Gone the slight bump that shaped her nose, the one she’d once tried to make peace with. Gone that irritated, strained look in her eyes during the photoshoot.

Smile, sweetheart. Just one more. Think: bright, accessible, powerful.

Gods.

Her smile in the photo looked carved from porcelain—white, wide, sterile. Her lips, impossibly soft, smoothed by some intern with a mouse and a warped idea of femininity.

And for what?

To reduce her to an image. A fantasy. Not even one that bothered with the title of the book—tiny, tucked in a corner like an afterthought. As if she were selling toothpaste. Or lingerie, judging by the ridiculous purple top and the push-up bra they’d forced on her, suggesting curves she’d never had. She wasn’t known for her body. She was barely known for herself anymore. Ellana Lavellan, the celebrated author. The reluctant phenomenon who (not that anyone would guess) would have bought every copy of that book just to burn them all in a massive bonfire. And spit on the ashes for good measure.

Do Dick and Babs really know how to be just normal friends? Seems to me it's always been flirty and intense and intimate. They'll always have this long, complicated, profound history together which is impossibly unique to them. Of course no one really gets them like the other does. They're the original Robin and Batgirl! It's like they've always been partners in crime. And push comes to shove, whatever rift the universe puts between them, they will still be a killer team. They'll always have this profound but complicated love for each other, beautiful and tragic. Like they're always more than just friends but also more than just love interests too. Dunno if there's a single word to describe them.

A short summary of the significance of “I’m Not That Girl” to Queer Interpretaions of Wicked.

When Glinda gives Elphie her flower hairclip, a reprise of “I’m Not That Girl” (which will be refered to as INTG for the rest of this post) is scored beneath the scene. It signifies the moment Glinda caused her to question if she really can be “That Girl”. The kind that is likeable and popular. But if you’ve listened to INTG it’s not about just being either of those things, but about how being likeable and popular would allow her to experience love.

INTG in its context in the play, is Elphie not feeling like she’s the kind of person Fiyero would fall in love with. She’s falling in love and seeing him choose someone else.

But what does that mean for the INTG melody at the end of popular?

INTG is about falling in love with someone you don’t think loves you back, and its worsened by the fact that you can see why they would choose them over you. First, Elphaba is confronted with feelings for someone she is supposed to hate. Next, she finds someone who she likes but is supposedly in love with the first person she had feelings for. INTG is also about the fear that she’s loosing the two people she loves most, to each other.

Which if that sounds familiar, it’s because its how Glinda ends up feeling during INTG reprise when Fiyero runs away with Elphaba. She loses the two people she loved most to each other, and she felt them slipping away from her quite early on. It’s the first time she has felt rejected. Given that the only person she had truely been understood by was Elphaba, she’s truely alone at the end of the show and is confronted by the fact that she is indeed not the girl she thought she would be which is further elaborated on in “Thank Goodness”.

INTG is solid proof that Glinda and Elphaba both experienced love and a want for commitment from one another which honestly supasses their love and wants from Fiyero (refer to that moment in defying gravity). All of which I would simply attribute to sapphic longing.

Bonus: scientific stuff where I just ramble about how all this informs my interpretations of the characters.

1. Elphaba is bisexual and Fiyero was just all around less complicated to end up with than Glinda given the specific circumstances of the story.

2. Fiyero is disaster bisexual who hides his pain with attention from others

3. Glinda may or may not be comphet lesbian at the beginning of the play. I could see a world where she reconciles with Fiyero and they have a polycule with Elphie but I don’t have enough info to say whether or not shes strictly lesbian or bi.
