1. How many are you happy with? Nominally, all of them. 

2. How many are…not great?

I wish I’d come up with a better theme for the titles of the three spinoff stories from “Acts of Service”. But individually I still think they fit their respective stories. 

3. How many did you scramble for at the last minute? lololol so many. “Woven Walls” came out of the end of the story; I was sure I’d just use a Hozier line until then. 

4. How many did you know before you started writing/creating, or near the beginning? Acts of Service, Words of Affirmation, Twice the Thunder (thanks to @bisexualwinry), Shun the Light, Tread Softly, Rum on the Fire, Absent with Leave, You, Too. 

5. How many are quotes from songs or poems? LOLOLOL the question my friends is how many are from Hozier songs? the answer is EIGHT. Four others are sourced from non-Hozier songs. and “Tread Softly” is from Yeats.

6. How many are other quotes? “You, Too” is a play on the “You either” line in Pacific Rim: Uprising that heralded the blessed polyamorous moment that inspired the fic, but I don’t know that that counts. 

7. Which best reflects the plot of the story/content of the fanwork? how long do we have here 

honestly on review, I often do the thing where the snippet of lyric I quote is meant to invoke the context of the line, which is more directly tied to the story, hence “Adding Shadows" (to the walls of the cave) for an action scene set in a cave, or (it’s a wonderful life) “If You Can Find It” for a Hansen-Pentecost blended family trying to scrape by on a planet that’s trying to kill them. I am not subtle. 

out of the handful that aren’t quotes, “Acts of Service” is like... the whole fic. Right there. Again, I am not subtle. 

8. Which best reflects the theme of the story?

I mean, “Acts of Service” again. tbh I try to match these to a mood when I can’t match the theme per se. “Woven Walls” has the lyricism I was going for and the suggestion of people putting up whatever flimsy barriers they can to protect themselves from vulnerability. “Unconventional Methods” for a bunch of misfit benders trying to train Avatar Chirrut to take down the Fire Lord when nothing they’ve learned is really applicable. “Tread Softly” for Hawke and Fenris tenderly nurturing a future for each other, oh no I’m crying about it again 9. Which best reflects the character voice of the story/pov of the fanwork?

basically all the Cara stories. particularly “A Tolerance for Pain,” “Work for Idle Hands,” and “Housed By Your Warmth”. and “It Looks Ugly, But It’s Clean” features a very bitter, grim, and goal-oriented Hawke.  10. Which is your favourite title?

I thought this would be really difficult, but I just love “Woven Walls” so fucking much

Briggs would fucking love Lan Fan holy shit, she would find places in the fort no one even knew existed and and find secret passageways through the vents and no one would know how she got up there but never question it. all the Briggs soldiers are like “oh, Lan Fan? she doesn’t talk much but she once ate three dinner rations in one sitting and sometimes pops out of the ceiling, we love her”

Smoke (MP 100 fanfic)

Summary: Reigen takes a smoke break, but forgets to check the time. For @reitziluz‘ MP 100 Fluff-bomb, inspired by @bisexualwinry‘s prompt list. Prompt 9: Smoke. No warnings apply. Strictly Platonic.

Reigen winced as the clouds outside broke and sunlight filtered in through the blinds. His headache had been building throughout the day, and this sudden light source was not helping. Sighing, he reached for the pack of cigarettes in his top desk drawer.

His head already felt lighter at the sound of the lighter flicking, the sight of the flame. Reigen lit the end, took a long drag of smoke and allowed the chemicals a chance to seep into his system. He could feel the alertness come back to his eyes, the weight lift off his head, and the general fog in his brain start to dissipate. Feeling better already, he breathed out, watching as the gray cloud slowly vanished. He took another drag, then exhaled it quicker, easily slipping into routine. As the cigarette grew shorter, Reigen allowed himself to get lost in his own thoughts.

A sudden, small cough broke through Reigen’s concentration.

Startled, he shot up, while easily pushing the butt of the cigarette down into the ashtray. He looked over to the source of the cough, which had started up again, and his eyes fell upon a small boy in an elementary school uniform. The thin strands of his hair swayed as the boy coughed into his fist, eyes shut tight through force. Reigen glanced at the clock on his desktop

Crap, it was that late already. The little boy - Kageyama Shigeo, though he had told Reigen to call him “Mob” for whatever reason - had only been working for him for a few weeks. Reigen still wasn’t used to having a part-time employee, especially one that was a 10-year-old. But he was already enjoying having an actual esper in the office. The last few real spirit cases had gone much smoother than they had in the past, and it was all thanks to Mob.

“Ah, Mob!” Reigen said, quickly regaining composure. As he walked over to greet the boy, he grabbed a tissue off his desk and handed it to him. Mob took it, a small “thank you, shishou” coming from him, and gave a few more coughs into it.

“Sorry about that, kid. Didn’t realize the time,” Reigen winced at the sound coming from Mob’s throat. Once he’d decided to keep the kid around, he promised himself no smoking when Mob was around or just about to come in. He didn’t really care what he did to his body, but he wasn’t going to damage the lungs of a child.

“Oh, it’s okay, shishou,” Mob said, soft voice carrying with a hint of hoarseness. “Dad smokes too, so I’m used to it. He usually does it outside though…”

Despite the attempt at comfort, Mob’s words just made Reigen feel worse. This kid already got that at home too?

“No, it really isn’t. To use your powers to their fullest, your lungs need to get to their fullest capacity! It’s irresponsible of me to smoke when you’re around; it’ll make you weaker.”

Mob tilted his head as set his bookbag by his desk. “But, why do you smoke then, shishou?”

Reigen waved a dismissive hand. “My powers are so strong, I no longer need to be concerned with such things. But you, you’re still learning how to fully use your powers. Plus, you’re still young; your lungs are tiny. You need to get all the air you can.”

When Reigen went to meet Mob’s eyes, the young boys were sparkling, looking up at Reigen like he was the smartest person in the world. Reigen bristled under the look; he wasn’t used to anyone looking at him like he was to be admired or idolized.

“A-anyway,” Reigen worked to regain composure. “We don’t have any scheduled appointments today, so you can get started on your homework while we wait for walk-ins.”

“Okay, shishou.”

While Mob got himself settled at his desk, Reigen set a reminder on his computer to alert him when it was 30 minutes before Mob was set to arrive. That way, if he needed a smoke, he would have enough time to get a quick one in and allow the air to clear.

Mob gave another small cough as he pulled a textbook from his bag.

Reigen winced, eyes lingering on the boy to make sure he didn’t go into another fit. He then turned back to his screen and opened the web browser. Pulling up a search engine, he clicked the box and typed “ways to quit smoking.”

The Sound that Scared Him the Most

A part of the fluff bomb kicked off by @reitziluz. Inspired by @bisexualwinry‘s Fluff Bomb prompts.

NOTE: This leans more towards angst than fluff.

Ritsu had thought he'd known what sound scared him the most.

He'd heard it only once, the day he met the thing that wasn't Nii-san, a not-sound that emanated from it in waves. The waves of not-color that accompanied the not-sound were terrible - stealing the vibrant blue of the sky, and the golden glint of sunlight off the fence, and the splashes of red on the concrete that couldn't be blood because there was too much of it - replacing them all with oppressive greys and blinding whites and dark, terrible blacks. But the not-sound devoured noise from everything it touched, tore the harsh thud of impact and the explosion of rubble from the air as the thing threw the older boys and Ritsu away from it like pebbles in a hurricane, reached into Ritsu's throat and snatched the sound of his pained, terrified breaths and his cries for Nii-san away from him, replacing it all with a void that smothered Ritsu worse than the pain in his head, a void somehow centered about the thing that couldn't be Nii-san.

The not-sound had haunted Ritu's nightmares, waking him before his whimpers could reach Nii-san's ears, forcing him back to the day the thing that wasn't Nii-san took Nii-san's warm rainbow aura and turned it black, cold, a dangerous and terrible thing that had lashed out at the older boys and Ritsu alike without thought, without compassion, without mercy. The not-sound resided in the back of Ritsu's head, cautioning him to take heed of everything he did, everything he said, while in Nii-san's presence, pressing him to make sure Nii-san's needs were met lest he hear it again. The not-sound was all he could think of when he saw Black Vinegar Middle School tear itself to pieces and fling itself into the sky - for what else, save the thing that wasn't Nii-san, could possibly unleash such destructive power?

But despite all this, it was on a different day - the day the world shattered beneath his feet (again), the day Nii-san had to fight with everything he had to save the world from a man mad with power, the day Nii-san let down all the barriers holding back his emotions and his psychic powers - Ritsu knew he had been wrong. Nii-san's laughter - ecstatic, insane, but unmistakably Nii-san's - was far worse than any not-sound that emanated from the thing that wasn't Nii-san.

At least the not-sound didn't come from Nii-san.

That laugh - mad with unlimited power though it was - couldn't have been anyone else.
