The Alchemy Oracle is a divination tool based upon my book The Alchemy of Possibility, an experiential guide for creative inspiration and personal growth. Each chapter includes my artwork—an archetypal painting or drawing—paired with my prose and poetry, and with an I Ching hexagram or tarot card which also resonates with the theme of the chapter.
Today we consult The Alchemy Oracle with the question, “What is the spiritual message for the collective this week?” Here is the answer:
Suffering
Painting: Horse in Anguish Holds the Branch of Life & Death in its’ Teeth
When we resist change, we suffer. Discomfort may be a symptom that we are inhibiting transition, are out of balance. Yet, when the thorns bleed the intimate chambers, change is forced into being. Death is inherent in the birth of every beginning. Read More.

More about The Alchemy Oracle When ‘The Alchemy of Possibility’ was first published, I gave numerous readings around the country. At the end of each, I invited people to take the book in their hands, allow a question to arise, and then open the book at random. Remarkably, each time this happened, the participants were amazed at the resonance, relevance, and illumination they found. With the technology now available, this oracle opportunity is re-created here online. Read more.

Fox Millions Duo — Biting Through (Thrill Jockey)
Two of independent music’s best drummers hitch up again in open-ended, improvisatory exploration, though this time out, synthesizer sounds take a more prominent role. Biting Through, recorded mostly live and without overdubs, captures Greg Fox of Liturgy and Guardian Alien and Kid Millions of Oneida and Man Forever (and under his given name, John Colpitts, in the forefront of percussive contemporary classical music) in fluid conversation. Two kits and a modular synthesizer form the building blocks for free-flowing interaction.

Hexagram 21 Biting Through, SHI HO
I am very familiar with this hexagram 21 Shi HO. It comes when there is something to be divined that it not clear from the outset. Appearances are not what they seem. There is cause to look deeper into the details of this inquiry. Court cases often come to mind. Biting through the meat to get to the bone, is a common metaphor for this reading.
The I Ching…

Biting Through -- Latina Anonima
I wake up nervous, depressed. Make myself some coffee and come sit at my desk. Throw the I Ching. "What has happened to me? Why have I grown so passive in the past few years? What has rendered me so helpless that even minor tasks of daily life appear to be insurmountable problems?"
Hexagram #21: "Biting Through." "Someone is doing you an injustice. . . ." Someone is acting dishonestly toward you; perhaps even criminally. . . . You, or friends, or a third party is knowingly behaving dishonestly toward the other or others, causing unhappiness and grief. . . ."
What does it mean? How do i interpret this message? There is a knock on the front door. I get up to answer it. On my way there I run a comb through my hair and button the robe that barely covers me. It is a neighbor. She's shaking, her voice cracks. I can't tell right away whether she is truly upset or whether this display of emotion is merely for effect. I decide quickly that it makes no difference. She has come to complain about my friends across the hall, to "warn," as she tells me, all of us. I fight the impulse to respond, to tell her off, set her straight. I want to know what she knows, what she thinks. . . .know thine enemy.
We are compatriots. I have known this, of course, but having her here, face to face (our first encounter), finally makes her presence in this building real to me. I feel nauseous. "tu estabas ahi anoche, verdad?" "You were there, in their apartment, last night, right?" "Those women, or whatever they are, don't have a schedule. They are up at all hours banging typewriters and throwing who knows what else around. They don't have a time to get up or a time to go to bed. I bet they're asleep now. They say they don't understand Spanish. I want you to tell them that I've complained to the super, that I've complained to the landlord, and that I'm going to complain to the police."
I want to grab her and shake her hard but decide that she's not worth that kind of intimacy. The thought startles and frightens me. I say to myself that I am making a big thing out of nothing. Come on, don't I know about troublesome neighbors? There's at least one in every building. And haven't I witnessed much greater displays of homophobia? I don't say a word to her. Having nothing to push against, she loses her bearings. She obviously had not anticipated my response. I watch her waver, stumble over words. She knows she's talking to an empty body. I have gone away and she doesn't know where to find me. I am above her, sitting on the doorframe, my knees drawn up, my arms around them. I wait for her to leave.
Reluctantly, I come down from the doorframe, dreading re-entry into the body that closes the door and turns the key. I don't want to feel the pain. There is a minor struggle, resistance. But the body pulls me in. Irresistible magnet. I am back in and confused. I want to talk to somebody. It is too early to call anybody. I am alarmed. It hurts too much. I feel unsafe. There is no one to hold me. I'm making a big deal out of nothing. I am overreacting. When am I going to learn to deal with this kind of situation? The I Ching says: "The dishonesty being perpetrated on you has not yet gone far enough to be serious or irreversible. . . ."
"If you act now, reconciliation if possible. . . ." I have nearly forgotten how to act. Reconciliation. I don't understand. I look at the clock. It is 11:30 already. Don't know where the time has gone. I have to get dressed and go out. I have wasted several hours. Self-indulgent. Irresponsible. Every day there is something wrong. Every day I split myself in two, spend hours putting myself together again. This is a shameful way to live. "Shame," says the dictionary, is a "painful emotion cause by a strong sense of guilt, unworthiness, or disgrace. . . ." "to live" means "to have life, to continue to remain alive. . . ." Obeying the laws of nature, my body, already in motion, remains in motion. Suddenly I feel grateful, for those laws. To live, to have life, despite it all, to continue to remain alive.

21 - Twenty-One Shih Ho / Biting Through The merciless, searing judgement of Lightning fulfills the warning prophecies of distant Thunder. Sage rulers preserved Justice by clearly defining the laws, and by delivering the penalties decreed. Though unpleasant, it is best to let justice have its due. SITUATION ANALYSIS: A terrible reckoning is due. A wrong will be righted -- and even if it has been you who has been wronged, you will tremble at the terrible power of Justice untempered by Mercy. Pray for your oppressor, that his punishment will fit his crime.
