The Black 4.0 Hat

There's a legend of the old west about an outlaw who hired a master haberdasher to forge him a hat as black as his soul. The haberdasher made the Vantablack Hat, and the outlaw was so pleased with his work that he murdered the haberdasher on the spot and burned his haberdashery to the ground so no one could ever have a hat as black as his.

That's how the legend of Anish Kapoor, the Man With the Vantablack Hat, was born.

But we aren't here to talk about how his story began. We're here to talk about how his story ended.

For that haberdasher had an apprentice. His daughter was every bit the haberdasher that he was. She saw her father's murder. Saw his life's work burn to the ground. She took one of the still-burning embers and scarred her own face as she swore a vow of eternal vengeance. On that day, a black hate took root in her heart.

She poured all her rage, all her suffering, all her hate into a hat. A hat forged in the fires of hell. A hat so black, it devoured hope itself. Anyone who wore this hat would lose all humanity, becoming a revenant fueled by pure vengeance.

They would become The Hateslinger.

Countless lives were lost in her blood-soaked rampage. Innocent lives whose only crime was standing in her way. But she didn’t need to find her target. She just needed to make her name. Her target would come for her as soon as he heard the legend of the Hateslinger, an outlaw with a hat even darker than his own. And when he came for her, for her hat, there was only one possible outcome.

Because Anish Kapoor could never wear this hat.

(this is the background for an artifact in my Homestuck fanfic, Sburb². Putting on this hat causes my Mage of Rage, a cowboy named Colt Graham, to go Grimdark)

What do you think of Stuart Semple's blackest black paint?

So, The Blackest Black or Black 4.0 is a product available from Culture Hustle, Stuart Semple's company.

I, personally, like that it creates a pleasant Void in reality without being as horrifically toxic as the original VantaBlack it was intended to mimic.

Ultimately, I do think pure voids in the universe are deeply erotic. I think pure nothingness has an erotic element to it.

However... the original drama surrounding this product is a bit ridiculous. It makes me roll my eyes far too much. The product itself gets a 5/10 for this, because outside factors are too much at play. However when used in an artwork I do think it has the great ability to elevate it further.

Self portrait - December 2023

I wanted to try the new Black 4.0 I got as a gift on something small, and it’s cool! It’s just takes the light and sucks it in. It reminds me of black velvet (not in texture but visually). I’m excited to use this on larger work.

I used a picture of myself from 2021, and this might be one of my favorite self portraits I’ve ever done tbh.
