Sage and I found weird fake floating rocks in Eye of Eden.

Neat trick she taught me for collecting black dye in EoE: Go ten minutes before the top of the hour. Work your way up to just before the hallway of winged light, collecting as you go. Wait in a safe spot until the dye resets, then go back down while collecting again. We saw these rocks on the way down.

Striking houmongi (irotomesode?) with a majestic swirling dragon.

This dark ground color called kurobeni is a red based purplish black. It’s made by first dying kimono red (in the past beni/safflower was used), then darkening tone with several dye baths (of iron oxide, horse chestnut etc) until desired depth. This method don’t give “true” hard black but soft dark thanks to the red undertones.

Blueish black on the other side uses a blue base (in the past made from ai/indigo). Binroujikuro is an example of those colors.

The secret to making a beautiful natural black dye is a 3 step process, but well worth the effort. The magical interaction between tannin & iron produces shades of gray, but by over-dyeing with the deep hue of logwood dye, a lovely black shade will emerge. Pomegranate skins make for a fantastic tannin source, so collect them while enjoying the juicy red seeds this time of year. This tutorial will show you how to make dye from pomegranate skin, dip dye in iron water and brew a pot of logwood for the over-dye. You will see results on cotton, linen, bamboo, silk gauze and felted wool pompoms.
