The Honorable Elijah Muhammad writes in his monumental work titled Message To The Blackman in America, in the Chapter “Economic Program,” under the section “SEPARATION! INDEPENDENCE!” on pages 203-204: “…WE MUST HAVE SOME OF THIS EARTH TO PRODUCE OUR PEOPLE’S NEEDS. …It is the right time that we seek SEPARATION AND INDEPENDENCE for our nation from the evils of our open enemies, and not the foolish things [that some of us are seeking and] doing. … [Our people] seek that (recognition) which demands better qualifications: education, the knowledge of self and others, manners and self-respect and the respect of others. But our people just do not have these qualifications until they first come to Islam”—or, “submit their will to do The Will of God”—“and bear witness to what Allah (God) has revealed to me. The Black community has always regarded the mainstream U.S. media with much contempt and suspicion, and for good reason. One day they report NONE of our issues, and the next day they conduct invasive interviews and extensive journalistic investigations into our lives--and our pain. In speaking with a Black man regarding the recent proliferation of media coverage of instances of police brutality against Blacks, neither of us were able to form a solid opinion of the phenomenon. Of course, exposure of such ills suffered by our people is key to progress, so mainstream media coverage is welcomed, BUT there is always an element of uncertainty and distrust; does the decision of these media outlets to suddenly start covering Black oppression stem from the media's new interest in racial equality and social justice, OR are interviews conducted with weeping, Black widows done with the sole intention of garnering clicks, generating profit and, ultimately, exploiting the Black narrative and experience for the entertainment of the masses as they sip their morning coffee? The world may never know.
