To black Vivziepop critics, I would like to ask for your opinion on the statement that "Alastor doesnt need to look 'black' because he's mixed and could be white-passing/mixed ppl can look like anything".
There's pushback against criticisms of Alastor looking "too white"/having no black features and redesigns where he's more visibly black, claiming that it in fact it enforces the stereotype that black and mixed ppl have to look a certain way to truly count, and even stating that "you only value blackness when its visible to you".
Personally I think these arguments would have more validity if there wasnt a pattern of supposedly black characters having no black features, like Emily, Seras and Velvette, and if Vivziepop didn't otherwise fumble representation by misusing voodoo symbols, carelessly throwing them around in the scene in the pilot when Alastor is doing his "voodoo magic", as well as Rosie calling Alastor "her pet".
There's so much Asian rep in animation lately and of course I'm happy! But when it comes to BLACK REP????? WE'RE WORSE THAN WE WERE IN 1980 I STG
