Friday Five: TV Nostalgia
Lately, I’ve had a lot of writing assignments focusing on shows that were part of the WB’s golden period. Before the CW existed to bring you Arrow and The 100, it was actually two separate networks: WB and UPN. The two merged to become the CW. The WB had some stellar teen dramas though. If anything, that network paved the way for teen dramas of today. You think Pretty Little Liars was crazy? It wouldn’t have existed without the WB laying the groundwork for teen television. Since I’ve been writing so many lists lately that focus on shows from that era, I thought I’d look back on some of my favorites.
Five: Veronica Mars
Yes, before Betty Cooper started investigating small town crimes in Riverdale, Veronica Mars did the same in Neptune. The series kicked off with Veronica trying to figure out who killed her best friend, help her dad keep his private investigative service afloat, and, you know, just get through high school. There were elements of old school noir, and Veronica was as sarcastic and biting as Jessica Jones. This is a bit of a cheat because, though it was made for the WB, it aired on another network. The show lasted three seasons (two on UPN, one on CW). It got a movie thanks to a kickstarter, and is coming back to Hulu for a fourth season this month.
Four: Black Sash
This is one of those shows that, unless you watched it, you’ve probably never heard of. It performed so badly that though the WB launched it as a summer series in 2003, it only aired six of its eight episodes. It followed a cop who had been framed running a martial arts studio with a bunch of young students who all had their own demons. Amongst the stellar cast were Missy Peregrym, Sarah Carter, and Corey Sevier. It was fun, and I think it just didn’t land on television at the right time.
Three: Buffy The Vampire Slayer
I can’t have a WB list without Buffy, right? I almost didn’t include this because Buffy has never really gone away. Novels and comic books have continued since the series went off the air. In fact, a new comic book series reimagining the high school years launched this year. This is actually a show that I think could benefit from a reboot, though I’m sure many would disagree. The story of literal demons in high school is one that a lot of people love, but it could certainly use some more, shall we say, color?
Two: Roswell
This is probably one of my favorite sci-fi shows of all time. Alien-human hybrids trying to survive high school with the humans they love. What’s not to like? Yes, season three is crazily uneven. And yes, some of the stuff in the show is really cheesy. But Roswell aired in a time when the only genre show aimed at teens was Buffy. It was fresh, and a great concept for a story. I’m so glad that the CW opted to reboot the series and age up the characters because the new series, despite all of its similarities, feels like a whole new story as well.
One: Dawson’s Creek
My favorite teen drama of all time? Absolutely. Dawson’s Creek somehow managed to make all of its giant vocabulary and melodrama completely relatable. It gave me my favorite television character in Pacey Witter. It paid homage to some great classics, like The Breakfast Club. And it kept even the most annoying of love triangles interesting. This is another show where I’d love to see a remake because this show is incredibly dated now. How would it change if it was made today?

Martial Arts Vent/Rant
Haven't been on here in quite awhile, but I need to vent a bit. I do Martial Arts, I earlier this year got my Black Sash, (which is like Black Belt in Karate) and one of the things you absolutely have to do is Spar. If you don't spar, you can't pass your test. Wellllll, there's someone in my Martial Arts school that might skip sparring, which is really screwed up, especially since she's trying to test for Black Sash. Why? Because she has a freakin' bad knee! I don't care if you have an injury of some type! As a Black Sash myself, it's annoying, unfair and screwed up that this person can skip Black Sash sparring whereas everyone else had to do it. It's screwed up. Period. It's starting to get to the point where I have to leave the School for a bit. Which is kinda hard since I've been doing Martial Arts for 12 years now. But still, it's jacked up.
