You know what's a cruel detail about the Battletech Universe that feels lazy but is actually kinda realistic? You can have media about these cool mercenaries doing cool mercenary things, just to get wiped out in a heartbeat and cease to exist.

Like, there's two whole novels about this cool company defying odds and beating back the Clans, only to get killed due to the fact that some source book said that the planet they were garrisoned on at a certain time was nuked clean, and when a writer was asked for clarification he just went "yea ok, they died"

Red Thorns / Black Thorns

Tropes: 'Enemies' to Lovers / Dark Romance / Second Chance / Football Player x Cheerleader / Mafia Adjacent

Red Thorns itself didn't really get super interesting till like the last 1/3 of it, but once it did it was so good! Personally, I thought Black Thorns was the better of the two. SO many times I wanted to dramatically scream NOOOOOO, but loved it the whole time anyway. I think that this duet is a super underrated part of the Rinaverse. I loved Sebastian and Naomi!

Very Halfassed

I don't know about anyone else who'd read this book or duology, but to me, it felt as if Kent was not writing Naomi and Sebastian's story with her whole heart. Like she just needed an in with the Yakuza if she ever wanted to write a story leading towards them. If Kent could give Elsa and Aiden three books when it really was unneeded, I don't understand how the Thorns Duet only got two books.

First things first, both protagonists's backstories are heavy and rich, there was simply not enough time developing it. Secondly, with the history Naomi and Sebastian had, two books made their story felt way rushed. Last but not least, it's the freaking Yakuza, this story deserves more developed drama.

All in all, I love so many things about the Thorns Duet except Kent's execution for it.
