ALEX TURNER in BLACK TREACLE
And it's getting dark, and the sky looks sticky, more like black treacle than tarrrrr
Rightly or wrongly, I’ve always felt that this line is Alex’s play on words on the phrase, “don’t rain on my parade,” an idiom meaning, “don’t spoil things for me.”
It’s also the title of a song in the stage show, “Funny Girl” which was made famous by a film adaptation, staring Barbra Streisand and Omar Sharif (see Wikipedia). This film is, “one of the most essential movies in queer film canon,” according to an article by watermarkonline.com.
Interestingly, even if Alex didn’t know any of that, the song itself was covered by Shirley Bassey.
Shirley Bassey is one Alex’s favourite artists. Not only did he cover “Diamonds Are Forever” at Glastonbury, but he also pointed it out to the NME in 2012, as noted in this article:
Exploring comments made by Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner about his favourite record which is 'Dangerous Games' by Welsh singer Shirley
And Dame Shirley Bassey is a gay icon too.
Black Treacle
"I watched a couple of westerns when we were doing this, like Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid which gets a reference in there. I also just wanted to put ‘belly-button piercings’ in a tune, I thought that would be good. I’d kind of wanted to do it for a couple of weeks and then managed to fit it in there. Why? I’d not thought about them for a while and they came on my radar somehow. And then I thought about this thing of them and the stars being juxtaposed."

I always assumed that Alex was insinuating that a lady with a certain piercing was perched above him—seemingly appearing within the night’s sky.
Considering that’s not true, I honestly don’t get what’s SO sexualising about mentioning a belly button piercing?
Doesn’t “lately I’ve been seeing things” moments prior to this line maybe imply that his eyes deceive him? Like… he’s seeing things? Or to be utterly risqué, he’s having fantasies.
Alex then talks about how the sky looks more like black treacle opposed to tar.. a metaphor for it being dark at night? He’s not actually saying the sky is Black Treacle neither him really seeing belly button piercings.🙄🙄
somebody told the stars you're not coming out tonight and so they found a place to hide
(Will the teasing of the fire be followed by the thud? Will you come out tonight?)
“Now it’s getting dark and the sky looks sticky. More like black treacle than tar.”
