Necron - Kulus (full album, 2023) black metal
After a series of frankly impressive demos and singles, it is finaly time for Necron, the one person indigenous black metal machine from Bristish Columbia to release their debut album, and what a debut it is. Raw and urgent riffing straight out of the Darkthrone playbook and acidic vocals take the lead, but worry not, this is not another generic cookie cutter band (not that we dislike those) as the aforementioned are accompanied by some truly frenetic drumming peppered with some eccentric tempo changes that manage to stop the listener from getting too comfortable and are destined to perplex some but hypnotize others. And isn't that the very essence of black metal, making art enchanting to some but leaving others befuddled? We sure think so, and we sure like this specific piece of art. Add to the above the great cover and production, and it seems we have a blazing new entry in the fast growing sphere of antifascist indigenous metal.
