I think I know the symbolism behind Grave’s scorpion lapel pins.
The pins might be a reference to the Ancient Egyptian Goddess Serket (or Serqet, Selket), who has a scorpion on her head and is seen as goddess of scorpions.
According to Wikipedia, the name Serqet's itself can mean "(she who) tightens the throat", referencing death through scorpion venom. It also can mean "(she who) causes the throat to breathe" since it believed that scorpion venom has healing properties. She was also believed to be able to heal those stings and bites. This makes scorpions both a symbol of healing and of death. Which represents what Percival Graves, or GrindleGraves is in this movie, since this character is both a ‘healing’ character, but also the cause of death later on.
Something I thought was also interesting is that the scorpion is perceived both as an embodiment of evil and a protective force that counters evil in some places in the world, which is reminiscent of his job protecting the wizarding community as Director of Magical Security in MACUSA.
Or maybe I’m reading into this too much? Just my twocents :)
Hey, I've been meaning to ask you this for a while. I'm thinking of getting into animation and/or visual effects. But I'm not sure what I should do to get there. Did you take a course specifically for visual effects? Is education in 3D-animation enough to land a job? Was it hard for you to find one? Sorry for bothering you. i really look up to you as an artist:)
Oh boy that’s a lot of questions! Why did you wait so long! Please feel free to ask me anything about this industry, I'll try to help as much as I can! My ask box is always open~ ♥ It’s never a bother!!!![my experiences under the cut, it's a tad long]
(Before reading- please keep in mind my opinion and experience does not reflect the industry or how one can ‘guarantee’ work in any way. I can only give my experience & story and try to help out where I know how to.)
I'm thinking of getting into animation and/or visual effects:
I’m very excited to hear this! It’s a long road ahead if you decide to take this path. Ask yourself why (like doing any course) - Are you wanting to improve your skills? Has this been a prior passion of yours? Or just plain interested in trying it out and seeing how it goes? ( <=== we’ll return to this particular one later)
Did you take a course specifically for visual effects?
Yes, but I was more interested in 2D animation at the time.I completed a bachelors in Digital Design and Animation. It was 3 years long :)
Is education in 3D-animation enough to land a job?
This is a tough one because it’s really how you utilize your education. I didn't land a job right after studying, but I still put myself out there and got to know people who were in the same interest's as me~ I interned teaching game development during my final year at uni through my tutor - which led me to monthly meetings/catchups at gamejams, and from there freelanced for 2 small indie studios whom I met through these communities, also while being a receptionist full time for an IT company after I graduated. I stayed within a circle of people I knew that would keep me on my toes.
If you want to study, find a good school/course that works towards helping you produce high quality work & show reels (this is very important) for when you complete the course. There are hundreds of courses out there- universities and websites can all provide the foundations for starting out in this area, it’s just how you use it and what you produce with the skills they provide and teach you. I’ve learnt during my time here it’s not the fancy certificate that matters to most studios - it’s the quality of work you show and can produce, while also proving you are able to work in high-tension environments/teams.
Was it hard for you to find one?
Yes. No sugar coating this one. I wasn’t the most social butterfly and I did eventually learn that the only way to get out there was to actually meet people in the industry. Because unfortunately, it’s sometimes who you know who can help give you that little boost- go to local meetings/events and panels (I went to monthly game jams and tutorial panels when available ), introduce yourself and ask questions and get business cards. If you can’t do that, talk to people on forums or online communities. I still look back and wish I put myself out there more, despite already having a job! I wasted a lot of potential meetups and resources while studying, idk why I didn't take advantage of more... I stayed in touch with graduates in my class as well as other people I met, so when one had a opportunity, they let me know!I found it particularly hard to submit show reels- it’s really scary! But once you get that first submission in, you can work towards your goal better each time.
Returning to the first section, if you are just curious about trying out FX/3D and have 0 idea of what it’s like, please try out a few online courses first. I started in a class of 40, and ended with around 15... Most dropped out first year and took business or something instead because they discovered they hated it. Don’t waste your money! Try a cheaper short course online or something.
I recommend checking out the websites: Lynda.com, Digital Tutors, Gnomon, Udemy and focus on trying out maya, nuke, zbrush, unity, after effects....these are usually what’s good to start with if you want an idea of what to download and try out.
A lot of these websites offer a free trial, so give it a go and download as much as you can!
Sorry for this mess of an answer, there was so much! I hope this helps a little bit. please PLEASE ask me anytime for anything you need help with, I’m more than happy to help :)Best of luck!!! ♥
Yo, I love your art so much. I especially love your Percival Graves art. Fantastic Beasts (especially movie one fandom) is fantastic and I'm super happy seeing art of him again. I'm also currently a big sonic fan and love your sonic art too (especially your art of shadow and rouge). My sister is also a huge Venom fan (it's her main fandom) and likes those posts as well, especially the more humorous ones. Having an artist like you is fantastic, and I hope you keep drawing and havin fun!!
a) thank you! im glad you guys enjoy my art!!
b) i saw ‘percival graves’ and ‘sonic’ in one block of text and was instantly reminded of that one time i drew graves as a sonic character... naturally i had to do it again
“It might be a bit sentimental, but no one says you can’t fall in love with your sugar baby." from DaddyWantsSomeSugar.Net I don’t even know why I like this line so much, but I think it describes the whole premise of the fanfic quite well.
13. favorite writing song/artist/album of this year
That’s actually ahard question to answer for me, because I (unlike what seems like every other writer) don’t really associate songs with characters or stories. So whenever I’m writing, I just listen to pretty much anything I would be listening to either way. However, recently I really like listening to albums, either instrumentals or something with Japanese lyrics so that I can’t understand the words :’D
My newest faves are:
this Ghost in the Shell soundtrack remix
this album called Sigma by REOL
and this “Future Bass” mix I found :D
21. Most memorable comment/review
I already answered this one here but another one that just really made me laugh was also on the sugar daddy au. The user name was “I don’t think you fully understand” and the comment said “how much I need the next chapter.” and that was just one of the funniest comments I have ever gotten tbh :’D
25. a fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read
Aaah, that’s such a hard question! But I really liked this little Fantastic Beasts fic called “Overtime” by theescapist99 It was just a really funny idea with a cute execution!
If you’re looking for something more “dark” this SPN fic called “Pain Equals Pleasure” by ChocolateKid really stuck with me! It deals with Stockholm Syndrome and other dark themes and I just think they did a really good job!
