This is not a photo of me. #FlashbackFriday || I will never forget the day @sotamblue tagged me in this photo and said, “Is this you?” I was mind BLOWN! I had to look closer to see if some artist had taken a photo of me and created this. Come to find out this was one of #FelaKuti’s wives. How I found my lineage through a photo on the Internet is a wonder but also... how tragic is it that (1) I can not find her name - just her title as some great mans wife and (2) that I can not actually trace my family back beyond a plantation. ▪️ This paper I’m presenting in a few weeks is on #HipHop as the language of the #BlackImpossible but in short that’s my way Of saying that Hip Hop is the prophetic that created and created our future reality for several decades now. This is #AfroFuturism. Point blank period. || This photo is prophetic. I am the afroFuture. She is an ancestor. The afroFuture as well. Living on in me, through me. Somehow. I don’t even know her name but my existence and remembering of her keeps her alive. Toni Morrison talks abt the future memory and he imagination - where Blk folk have to imagine the pieces of the story that slavery keeps us from ever knowing. I talk abt his via #BlackGirlHomework @blackgirlmixtape “Ancestral Healing.” It is Healing her and me for me to speak her name and finish her story. We both are the black impossible! It’s sad and dope at the same time! 🙏🏾 You can donate to the learning and continued work of #BlackGirlMixtape by using the link in the bio and scrolling down to see “Donation” options.
