I can honestly see a version of Gabe who has NPD and is not capable of “love” as we know it. Like, he only “loves” someone as long as they’re being useful to him, either practically or emotionally. Maybe not a sociopath, but definitely a narcissist.

I think Gabe’s love would be very conditional, revoked whenever he feels slighted or feels like he’s not getting what he needs out of one of the twins. And it’s soul-crushing for them, because of how carefully Gabriel as constructed this whole situation. He’s isolated them, made himself the center of their world, and he manipulates them with his “love”. He can’t love selflessly the way typical people can, but he can mimic what that might be like, so he can further his goals. 

I think that’s a better way to describe the kind of love Gabe can give. Right from the mind of the OP lol.

I also like to think that Gabe didn’t mean to make his all of his fickle satisfaction entirely dependent on the twins. He literally can’t get it from anywhere else anymore. Not even missions that are executed perfectly, to the letter, all from a plan that he worked up himself, is as satisfying as bending the twins to his will. Can you imagine how pissed he’d get when he realizes that? That he craves their eager need to please him just as much as they crave his “love” and “approval.” Not that he’d ever let them know that though.

I love in your fic how Reyes always seemed to have a constant, simmering, low-level of irritation and discontent. I could imagine it stemming from him knowing that no matter how he manipulates them, no matter how sweet he is to them or how hard he is on them, they will always, deep down, love each other more than they could ever love him. I agree! Cause it’s true, no matter how otherworldy Gabe may seem to the twins they’re still always going to love eachother more than they’ll ever love him. True love. Plus being twins has all of these supernatural connotations to it anyway don’t it? They already had a sibling bond on a whole other level. No matter how hard Gabe tries he can’t condition that kind of bond with him into them. And every mean, nasty, depraved thing he puts them through really only strengthens their bond. 

I could see him at one point snapping, becoming really spiteful and resentful at all of the things he’s done for them. At all the time and energy he’s spent. Was it all really worth it when he’s never gonna end up with what he truly wants? He’ll never be satisfied. I think at some point he’d realize he should have been tearing them apart, not making them do things that would bring them closer. Personally, I’d love to see this all just crash and burn one day cause he’s just so tired, is sick of getting so jealous every time he sees them coddle eachother. Of watching them flaunt and show off the thing he can never achieve, the one goal he’s never gonna reach.
