Two things happening. One -- a digest decided to make "couch potato" a secret password. And two -- "couch potato" (misspelled here) was very recent vintage at the time of the initial printing. From couch + potato; coined by Tom Iacino in 1976 as a pun on boob tuber (from boob tube (“television”) and tuber (“potato”)); trademarked by Robert Armstrong from 1976–91.
A "Couch Potato" made its appearance one month following" Coach Potato", very quick turnover with correction.
Continue: Oh, yeah. It originally was in a phone call to a friend. His girlfriend answered, and it was just an off-the-top sort of thing when I said, "Hey, is the couch potato there?" She looked over and there he was on the couch, and she started cracking up.
