Here is the thing that’s been made clear to me. Kyouraku drinks because he wants to die. Even his shikai carries with it the possibility that the opponent may win. Shikai is vulnerable, and bankai is ten times more so. He’s with Ukitake (as a best friend or, as we all know, lover) because Ukitake loves life so much he’d trade one more day for a horrible organ-eating god. The idea that Kyouraku even briefly thought about bankai during the Stark fight (especially watching how much stronger all the Arrancar were) makes Ukitake’s, “HONEY NO” make so much more sense. Because who choses suicide over children’s games? It’s all a gamble, but bankai goes right to the ultimate gamble: who has more spiritual pressure, pal, you or me? It’s a kind of Russian Roulette. NOT A GOOD GAME, KYOURAKU. DO NOT PLAY.
