Lailah couldn’t believe what she was seeing. It didn’t make any sense; she never thought it was even possible. But there the ugly old hag was, placing her gnarled fingers on the angel’s protection sphere. Her nails dug into it like it like cheap cloth as she peeled it open and smiled. Lailah tried to seal the barrier, but when that failed she went to behead the evil creature. Panic barely had time to seize her when the blade passed through the illusion and a knife plunged into the angel from behind. 

Blinding light flooded from Lailah’s eyes and mouth, as if her very divinity was leaving her. She couldn’t move, couldn’t think, only scream. It took every ounce of concentration and will to teleport away, before her power was completely drained. She meant to go to Breena who could heal her quickly. Instead, she ended up on the doorstep of a different ally. 

Dragging her bleeding frame across the pavement, Lailah made her way to Wyatt’s door. Perhaps she should have been grateful it was raining, hopefully it would wash away the evidence. She only had enough strength to bang the door twice. Hoping he would hear it, Lailah sank against the wet ground, fighting against the darkness webbing across her vision.
