How to make hair holes for 3D models
Hi, I make pony figures like this ^ and nowadays I like to include an option that has built-in hair holes, so hair can be pushed in similar to how an actual pony is rooted.
Not all printers are going to be able to make this option "cleanly" and some people prefer to drill their own holes or glue on hair. Also, because 3D printers usually use solid materials, the fibers need to be glued in securely on the opposite side. The holes will also be much bigger than the holes on vinyl ponies, but there will be less of them.
First I add a default cylinder to blender and go to edit mode
First I make my cylinder really small using S (size) and then tall by using S and Z (vertical sizing)
Then I make a curve -> path, which is like a little line. In edit mode, I move that line so it curves with the neck.
back to the cylinders, I went to Modifier -> added an Array so now we have a bunch of cylinders. I also offset them a little in space.
Then I added a curve modifier under the array, with the path, named Nurbspart, as the Curve Object. Now all my cylinders automatically line up down the path!
All I have to do is add a boolean to the head and then select the cylinder(s). Once I hide the cylinders (h) you can see the holes I've now made down the back.
By moving the curve path and sizing the cylinder, plus playing with the "array" settings, I can adjust how big the holes are. If I duplicate the cylinder in edit mode, I can make a two-line array (or more if I want.
Again, some printers might have issues with these little details. Resin needs to be rinsed out of the holes. And the hair will need to be glued in carefully so it doesnt fall out. But it is doable!
