PSALMS 84:11; "For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will be withhold from them that walk uprightly." God doesn't hold back on His goodness. In fact the Father loves to give His children gifts. These gifts are all encompassing and gladly given. How do I know? My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning. (Psalm 22:1, NASB95) This question is one of the most well known verses of the Psalms because Jesus cries it out on the cross (Matt. 27:46; Mk. 15:34). God's people have often felt abandoned by God during times of persecution and suffering. It sounds like many of the cries of Job, who felt that God had become his enemy.Abraham surely felt that God had abandoned him when his obedience was tested to see whether he would sacrifice his only son (Gen. 22).David, who penned this Psalm, often felt abandoned, (e.g., when Saul, his father-in-law, sought to kill him).Paul talks about having "become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things" (1 Cor. 4:13). In its ultimate sense, as a righteous sufferer, only Jesus truly knows what it is to be abandoned by the Father as the weight of the world's sin was placed upon Him (cf. Is. 53:10; 2 Cor. 5:21). Nevertheless, Jesus always maintained His hope in God's promises. In a paradoxical way, during His suffering and abandonment at God's hand, Jesus declares that "the father is with Me" (Jn. 16:32). Although suffering is only temporary and is not the end, it is still taken very seriously. This Psalm's structure shows a movement that helps one deal with grief and suffering and then move towards hope and praise. Use the garbage they are throwing at you as a stepping-stone toward your own spiritual destiny! The God of the mountaintop is the God of the valley. Anyone can sing when the sun is shining but you also need a song in your heart at night. It's not what you're going through; it's what you're going to that matters. Keep your eye on the prize! Loving someone doesn't mean you have to agree with everything they say and do. Love them and let God judge them. And show them the difference Christ's love can make in the life of a Believer. If you act any differently than the wife abuser down the street, how is your neighbour going to ever have the opportunity to see Christ's love in action?
