“ Kodavas are a community of nature and ancestor worshippers. Some of our customs have been influenced by our neighbours in South Canara and Kerala. Theréy or Kola or Theyyam are similar to one another but each community has its own nuances,” explains © Raina Nanaiah, who clicked these beautiful photographs of the Kodava rituals. “The ‘theréy kattuvo’ ritual is conducted across most Kodava families in Kodagu. I had the opportunity to shoot this custom at the Monnanda Okka, Nelji. These rituals last through the night. The chosen man bathes in the cold river and dresses in bright colours. Then the spirits of deities, oracles and ancestors are summoned. Once his body is possessed by the spirit, okka members ask for blessings, guidance, protection and favours. These are magnanimously showered on them. This ritual is one of the most anticipated customs of the year. ”
