De Riva + Blighted Treviso
Lucanis Week - Day 5: Water
Word Count: 100 @datvcompanionweeks
His nose wrinkled at the smell as he knelt carefully at the edge fo the canal. The canals of Treviso had never smelled good, but this was different. There was a putrid element to it - a rot - he had never smelled before. Curse the Evanuris. They had blighted the water. As if the Daathrata’s occupation was not enough, they poisoned the one thing everyone here relied upon. The canals were the blood of Treviso. While one never drank from the canals, not intentionally, blighted water was not safe to travel on either.
How was he to fight a blighted sea?
WIP Wednesday - Prisoner
Illario/Lucanis Gothic Fic - Antagonistic Pre-slash Snippet (Blighted Treviso)
🐦⬛ 🐦⬛ 🐦⬛
Illario spat blood at his cousin's feet, but Lucanis only glared down at him. His eyes were clear and apparently uninfluenced by the demon he had talked about ridding himself of.
"This is what we are, Lucanis!" Illario shouted. "Caterina always meant for me to kneel at your feet and be your whipping boy. She trained me to act from the shadows and do what was necessary, while you turned yourself into some kind of folk hero—"
"I don't make excuses for what I am," Lucanis interrupted, his eyes cold. "I was the monster stalking the shadows for Caterina before I was ever an abomination. You were forced to your knees because of your own actions, and I'm left with very little interest in your advice. It falls to me to lead the Crows, Illario. If you're not interested in receiving my orders, you can get out of my office."
How casually the First Talon would condemn Illario to the cold prison of his quarters, left to drink and await the bile of Caterina's mandatory dinners.
Saddest thing about letting treviso be blighted is having to kill Chance Candide.
Corrupted sky
When you angle it just right, you can almost ignore the Blight in the city, but when the sky itself is the colour of the Blight, it's hard to ignore something is very wrong with Treviso.
A sunrise should not look so wrong. This playthrough broke my heart to do and I shall never do it again.
Asking about Oops saved minrathous!!! For the wip game!!!

So, this one is the most rough, just verbal sketching at the moment. The Rook in this one may or may not end up being Kiore (my canon Rook) in a different timeline. I'm leaning towards a different Rook at this moment, though. Still a Veil Jumper but much more in tune with Spirits. She can perceive Spite more than my other Rooks. And early in the game events, she impresses upon both Spite and Lucanis that she will keep an eye on him and offers her company at nights when Spite wants to go on walks. So there's a rapport between Rook and Spite early. Lucanis relaxes more and kind of starts to trust in both of them a bit earlier.
And then the dragons attack. Rook picks Minrathous. Because she knows what happens when that Tevinter is in power. Her people don't have their homelands anywhere because of that Tevinter. They're still not safe because of that Tevinter.
Here are some of the rough, unrefined "sketches":
First up is Lucanis' recounting part of his attempts to stop the dragon, this being well after the events. They're going in the direction of reconciling:
"Spite and I tried. We tried to reach the dragon but it flew ever higher and we could not keep up. The air was too thin. Even Assan was unable to reach it. Always out of range. A mockery. We couldn’t force it to land. We couldn’t harry it or lead it anywhere. " She had seen him soar on the battlefield but never to such heights. It broke her heart again to consider the lengths he went to to force it to land.
Lucanis is angry about everything that happened but he turns a lot of it inward on himself. It becomes more about his own failings to stop the devastation than Rook's impossible choice. He doesn't really begrudge her for it. But the feelings he does have are knotty and dense and hard to untangle.
"And, in the aftermath. The Blight, the death. I did what I could. I had to. I couldn’t leave when my city needed me. And there you were, rallying support, setting up supply lines through the Crossroads. Always there. I was grateful. I am grateful. But the resentment came unbidden. I had to withdraw further. And it’s not fair, what I felt towards you. Not anger. Never anger. Not really. Just grief and resentment. And pain for what we had, what I thought we’d never have again. I still wanted to be there with you. I still want to be there with you. But I don’t deserve it. "I lashed out at you. You’re right. I was trying to hurt myself more by pushing you further away."
(in the actual fic, these won't just be giant blocks of dialogue. Not all of it will be present in the end and there will be actions/descriptions breaking it up. This is just to sketch the emotional state he's in)
Earlier, before they've reconciled more and they're both angry at each other, Rook has some of this to say to him about what he's doing to himself in his grief:
"You don’t always need a whip for self-flagellation, you know. Punishing yourself with blistered palms or overworked muscles is just as effective. And why leave your body alone to suffer when you can, instead, fill your mind and heart with loathing for all the things you failed to do? It makes for a neat package, right? A box full of hatred and worthlessness and shame. Wrapped snug in regret and bound together by the justification that you deserve it all. And worse. But who does that help? What purpose is there in bleeding yourself dry?" Lucanis roars a thing back at her
Spite ends up bringing Lucanis to her, out of fear that he's going to harm himself and that kind of jolts Lucanis out of the worst of it: that the demon could see more clearly what he was doing to himself than he would allow.
Some other highlights: thanks to contact with Antoine and Evka, Rook is able to rope in the help of Warden Surana to set up relief efforts on Treviso. She has her own contingent of Wardens to assist in her research and she employs them in helping secure a better base of operations for Blight relief.
The fic is planned to be long since it takes a long time for Rook and Lucanis to reconcile given everything that happened but they will, in the end.
