Ornette Coleman’s "Blindfold Test" and "Caught In The Act" Five Spot Review
Downbeat Magazine, January 7, 1960
Happy Birthday to Wynton Marsalis, 18-October-1961 Blindfold Test Quotes regarding Wynton Marsalis:
“It’s incredible playing, understanding of swing rhythm and all those things – just the obvious things. But not only a great understanding of the swing tradition, but it’s their own language they’ve created…. And it’s improvised. That’s another thing that’s great, is they’re really improvising, really making up lines, but still in the whole vocabulary and vernacular of the tradition.” Mark Turner on “Laughin’ and Talkin’ with Higg” -ROMARE BEARDEN REVEALED 2004 (Branford Marsalis, tenor sax; Wynton Marsalis, trumpet; Eric Revis, bass; Jeff Watts, drums)
“Wow, that’s beautiful. I really enjoyed that. You have to make me a copy of all these records! …if Duke Ellington wanted to write an African suite, he would have done an arrangement like that…. Wynton Marsalis! Really. He didn’t play a solo…. It’s a great collaboration…. It’s definitely Duke Ellington-esque. Something that, like I said, Duke would have done—the voicings, the solos, and some of the contemporary stuff. It’s very beautiful.” Hugh Masekela on “Place Congo” - CONGO SQUARE 2008 (Wynton Marsalis, composer, in collaboration with Ghanian drum master Yacub Addy)
“This last tune was absolutely lovely. I enjoyed the trumpet player because he took his time and told a story during a solo. It reminds me of when I was with Art Blakey when I was much younger, and Art Blakey always made the young musicians who came through tell a story when you play a solo. This trumpet player was very soulful, an excellent trumpet player…. The trumpet player played so superb. I don’t know anybody who plays the trumpet so well like that and, as I said, tells a story; you don’t learn that in books and school, you have to have on-the-job training. I’ll have to say Wynton Marsalis. 5 stars.” Eddie Henderson on “J Mood” - ROMARE BEARDEN REVEALED 2003 (Branford Marsalis, tenor saxophone; Wynton Marsalis, trumpet; Joey Calderazzo, piano; Eric Revis, bass; Jeff Watts, drums)
James Carter: Before and After Blindfold Test
James Carter’s ears are as big as his saxophone technique. This 2012 Before & After blindfold test proves that. From Sidney Bechet to Anthony Braxton, his comments and appreciation of those who came before him on the saxophone is amazing.

Imagine this lead-in to a Down Beat Blindfold Test featuring The Banana Splits' Bingo
Make no mistake about it: Bingo, the gorilla/orangutan cross drummer and sometime vocalist with The Banana Splits, as well as a comic genius for the band's act, has certainly experienced it all, enough to fill the proverbial volume of memoirs (which Bingo, by his own admission, admits "he's still trying to figure out"). But what's especially worthwhile is that he agreed to take our Blindfold Test to kick off the second part of a Banana Splits concert performance in a small-town Iowa ballroom as part of what the band calls its "Road Trip of Redemption," aimed at reclaiming their name and repute seen as compromised by a recent horror film treatment thereof which they felt was tasteless and unflattering.
Bill Henderson: Blindfold Test
Ted Panken posted this uncut blindfold test with the great and underrated Bill Henderson ten years after they did it in 2004. The affable, brilliant singer reveals as much as himself and his craft as he does his assessment of others in this revealing monologue. Acting paid the bills, but singing is what made him unique and special.
