How to Export Your Tumblr Blog
Given that a dear friend of ours just lost their fandom art blog after over a year of almost daily posts, I figured I might teach/remind some people how to perform an export of their blog. This method is unfortunately not available on the mobile app. A preliminary check shows that you CAN request an export from your mobile browser, but I cannot guarantee that you will then be able to download it onto your mobile device once the file is ready. Therefore, I recommend downloading the file onto a computer instead of a mobile phone/tablet.
What you will do is open the page of the blog you wish to export (under the 'Account' drop-down menu):
Then go to your 'Blog settings' page. At the very bottom of the page, there will be a button labelled 'Export'.
The process is automatic; you do not need to keep the website open for the export to complete. Depending on the age and activity of your blog, it may take several hours. You will receive an e-mail notifying you when the file is ready to download (so make sure your e-mail address is up-to-date). Once it is complete, return to your blog settings page to download the file. It will be a ZIP file containing all media and posts made on your blog, as well as all Tumblr Messaging conversations you had with the exported blog. Mind that this process is not account-wide, so you will need to do this individually for any sideblog/s you wish to back up.
Of course, if you do lose your blog at some point after the export, it of course won't be a perfect replacement, and that won't make it suck any less, but Christ, it'll be something.
I hope this can help at least a little bit.
Tumblr Export/Download
Everyone who went through Tumblr's process to export AND download the ZIP file associated with their blog... [Yeah, the one that took 2, 3, 4 or more days to complete]
1. Verify you have content INSIDE the zipfile **[IMPORTANT: Do NOT rely on the volume size in the belief there is anything. You must open the zipfile and physically verify. It may take a few minutes to refresh]**
2. In the event there is NO content, use the link:

There are instructions along the way. This method does NOT compress content, so make sure you have hard drive space or better yet use an external drive device.
** However, we know there are some who may not be quite as tech savvy as others. That's alright. There are people who can help step you through, if you need help.**
FYI.... My 16K posts completed in 90hrs to an empty file even though it showed a volume of 14.6G Running the above took 2-1/2 hrs and contained everything except drafts.
This is a good sound practice to know how to backup your blog just as a means of keeping and retaining your content.

Happy to report that my Tumblr blog Export FINALLY WORKED! ;U;!!! After 2 days of trying and each attempt taking at least half a day, my 8th attempt actually finished without the "Failed - Network error" message. ;U;!!!!!!!!!! My 6-year-old blog with fairly daily posting resulted in a 21GB zip file.
I can finally post fangirling to Tumblr again! ;U;!!!!!!! There's SO MUCH---TO MUCH squee'ing to catch up on! Joker in Smash, Avengers Endgame, The Game Awards, so much reaction fan-art, Kingdom Hearts III opening released,...! And this time, I'm going to have to remember to backup/screengrab each of my posts, as I go along. I don't want to worry about all these memories disappearing again.
I will say, that this zip file of my blog is kind of odd. It takes such a long time just to view one HTML file. Within the zip file, there's another zip file "posts.zip", containing 16,545 HTML files of each post...Well, I assume it's each of my posts. I would have thought that a semi-daily 6-year-old blog would have more. I hope this zip has all my posts! o.o Because both the top and bottom HTML files in my zip file's list are from 2014, my blog started in 2013, and somewhere in the middle of the list I found a 2018 post,... o_o? Maybe it is all here, but out of order. Well, as long as it's all here, it's fine. ^_^
It doesn't look like screengrabs of my blog. It's all white backgrounds and New Times Roman font. But it does include whatever images I reblogged, whatever the original poster commented, text of the posting date, tags, and even embedded videos, kanji font, and links that work. I'm assuming it should have been able to include reblog comments I made from others' posts. But there is no list of Notes. So no notes of reblog comments added to your posts, no number of hearts/likes, and I have yet to find a file with a Reply comment recorded.
I found an HTML file that looked like it was supposed to have an image, but it was missing. Then I looked through my Archive for a post from that date, and I have none. o_o? Weird glitch. Mysterious! o.o???
Just to be safe, I think I will screengrab my entire Archive, at least so I can keep fandom memories in chronological order. ^_^ Or maybe I should extract all the files from the zip, and write my own local drive HTML file to organize everything. *o*! But I think the Tumblr Export was successful! ^-^

I haven't been posting much on my primary Tumblr blog lately, since I've been trying to download a backup of it using Tumblr's Export function, and I was afraid posting more might slow down the Export. Some people also interested in the Export process have asked how that's been going. So here's a (hopefully-light) summary.
On 12/5/2018 at 3:29pm, I clicked the Export button to start the Backup process. The entire time, I was afraid of turning off my laptop or accidentally closing my browser window. I had started the process while out of town and after a few days of the "Backup processing..." message still being unchanged, I was beginning to wonder if I'd be able to turn off my laptop and drive home.
On 12/7/2018 at 2:18pm, I messaged Tumblr Support, asking if 2 days was a normal amount of time to expect the Export process to still be working, or if it's likely frozen and I should try starting the process all over again. I got an automated-sounding reply. But I messaged again, and the next email explained that "We're currently experiencing higher-than-usual volumes of export requests. Thanks for your patience, and rest assured that your export request will be filled." It didn't answer my other questions, asking if interacting with Tumblr, posting more to my blog, posting to my other secondary blogs, or if even leaving Hearts on other people's blogs, somehow interfered with my Export process. Would I have to stay off Tumblr entirely, until the Export process finished? No answer to that, and I probbaly shouldn't have touched Tumblr for this week, just to be safe...Buuuut I couldn't really handle that. ^^; At least the second email gave the sense that 2+ days for the Export of a 6-year-old blog was NORMAL and I shouldn't worry about it.
But after 3 days, I and my laptop really needed to drive home. I tested re-accessing my blog's Settings>Account>Export through a different browser window, and it still showed the "Backup processing..." message, even in that whole other browser window. This seemed to prove that the process wasn't dependent on the function happening through a specific browser window, or even on my computer. It was all happening on the Tumblr servers' side. So I let my laptop go to Sleep mode and even shut off. And sometime after I arrived home and returned to Settings>Account>Export, the "Backup processing..." message was still there. So I could feel secure that the process was ongoing and uninterrupted, regardless of what my laptop was doing.
On 12/9/2018 at 6:35am, Tumblr sent me an email that my blog was "ready for download!". The "Backup processing..." message had turned into "Download backup Dec 9, 2018". I made sure my laptop had gigabytes of space available before I started my download, and my first download attempt was at least 1.4GB. But it failed due to "network error". I've been trying to complete a download ever since then. Right now, I'm currently on my fifth attempt. It's going past 1.5GB. I've let each of my attempts running, downloading all day and all night, and when I eventually return to it, they've each had the "Failed - network error" message, so far. Maybe my wifi connection at home is terrible. The signal does very briefly go out for a second sometimes. Maybe this could have been avoided if there was an option to download a blog in shorter chunks, like by month, to decrease the necessity for long, extended stretches of flawless, strong wifi signal. Hopefully, the 5th time's the charm. ^^;;;
So there you have it. Expect around 4 days for a blog backup Export, if your blog has 6 years worth of almost-daily content. Then give at least 2+ days for downloading the Export backup. And make sure you have several gigabytes of memory space. I'll give an update report again when I finally download my blog backup and can look at the files.
Hopefully, it'll all be finished before the 12/17/2018 ban. I don't think I have anything ban-worthy on my blog, but after all the posts about safe stuff getting flagged for no reason, I'd just feel safer if I had a backup of my blog. Once that is all secure, and I get into the habit of downloading new reblogs/posts as I go, I'll start posting to Tumblr more often again. Good luck to everyone trying to Export their blogs! <3

so i am interested in backing up my blog but it seems to be too big (~200,000 posts) has anyone had any luck exporting giant blogs like mine? i know how to export but the zip file takes days to generate and days to download to the point that it actually times out on tumblr’s side and they just cut off server connection. i have tried several download managers but they don’t seem to be able to split up the download into smaller pieces because of errors on tumblrs side. any advice would be helpful here
In case anyone is curious about that Export feature here, I don’t recommend it unless MOST of you blog is original content, or at least SUPER important to you.
My blog is 6 years old, with 33k posts. Mostly reblogs. It took 2 days to process and several hours to download. 35.5 gigs unzipped, 62k media files. 150 mb of tiny kb htmls!
While I’m sure there’s some Grade A nostalgic shit in there, in my case this was SOOO unnecessary. I don’t need this archived and don’t relish the idea of sifting through 62,000 files. So... just FYI. PSA. Whathaveyou.
