PETA and A Continuation of “What Makes a Man?”
If you haven’t read “What Makes a Man?” I encourage you to go to this link and read that post before continuing with this one: https://brooklynblogsaskat.tumblr.com/post/183140056000/what-makes-a-man
That being said, let’s dive down this dark and twisted rabbit hole.
Many of you may have noticed all of the PETA memes on the internet, and perhaps I’m a bit slow to the chase, but here we go anyway. PETA. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. What defines “ethical treatment”? While I won’t get into my personal thoughts on what ethical treatment may or may not be, I will say this - PETA is a shadow over the doorframe on the mission to rescue and treat all animals who are left in bad positions.
PETA’s website has a little button set under “WHAT PETA STANDS FOR”. If you push each button, you’ll get a lovely little paragraph about each part of their acronym. Under the word Ethical, they have posted this paragraph:
“We are taught the Golden Rule as young children, and all major religions teach principles of nonviolence and kindness. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Ethical treatment - the Golden Rule - must be extended to all living beings: reptiles, mammals, fish, insects, birds, amphibians, and crustaceans.”
So. Ethical treatment must be extended to all living things? I agree. But tell me.
Do you think it is ethical to euthanize over 99% of the animals that come into your care?
Well, I think not. PETA claims that they (for the most part) only euthanize the “unadoptable cases”. And yet, most of the animals they take in are euthanized within 24 hours of when they were brought into the shelter! I am personally disgusted by this facade of “gentle treatment and mercy” when it comes to blatantly murdering thousands of animals! And even then, PETA has the absolute audacity to go on and say THIS under the word “Treatment”!
“All beings desire freedom to live a natural life, according to their inherent desires and instincts. While the lives of all beings necessarily involve some amount of suffering, human beings must stop deliberately inflicting suffering on all beings for our own selfish desires. We lose nothing in replacing a cheeseburger with a veggie burger or a leather purse with a fabric one. But beings we exploit lost their lives just for our fleeting fancy.”
All beings desire the freedom to live a natural life. A NATURAL life. Not one that is dictated to end when you decide to shove a needle into their veins! (Can you tell I’m about to lose it, readers?) Now, I can perfectly understand not buying clothing and accessories that are made out of animals who have to die for it to be made, and to some extent, I can even understand those who might choose to go vegan for the cause of animal rights! But PETA is contradicting itself here, people! PETA supposedly “advocates” for animal rights while simultaneously murdering them in droves!
Backing up to the comment I made on “unadoptable cases”. Here is what a 2013 article from PetMD says about what makes an animal “unadoptable”:
“The animal owner survey results supported the veterinarians' assertions regarding which disorders or conditions owners would consider treatable or manageable, in that most cat and dog owners stated a willingness to expend the money and undertake the methods of care that would be required to treat chronic or serious health conditions.”
What this is basically saying is that a few extra days must be spent, evaluating a possible owner, to see if the said owner would be willing to care for that animal’s needs. This study concludes that most owners ARE willing to make significant financial investments into the healthcare of their animals. But it takes time to see that. I understand that PETA doesn’t turn away any animals and that they will run out of room sooner or later, but that does NOT justify euthanizing over 99% of the animals that come into their possession in under 24 hours from the time they were received! In 2011, PETA’s adoption rate for dogs was 2.5%. Their adoption rates for cats? A pathetic 0.4%. That’s right. Out of the 760 dogs they received that year, they adopted out 19, shelled 36 off to other shelters, and killed the remaining 713. Out of the 1,211 cats they impounded, they transferred eight, adopted out five, and euthanized the other 1,198. That’s nearly 1200 cats they murdered in a single year! That’s just over three cats a DAY. I’m not sure if you know this, readers, but euthanasia is expensive. So instead of buying all of these murder drugs, why don’t you spend your money on expanding your shelters so you can actually take in animals instead of running a slaughterhouse with a pretty logo?
And another thing! When asked if they ever euthanize animals that are considered adoptable, PETA’s own Ingrid Newkirk said, “If we get them, and we cannot find them homes, absolutely.” When asked what sort of process they go through to find the animals homes, PETA simply dropped “no comment”.
COME ON! Why hasn’t anyone dropped a legal bomb on them yet!?
Okay. Phew. I’m not even going to get into all of the stuff that’s in the memes. I’m too emotionally wiped out from writing all of this. I’ll post the links I used for information. See you all in the next posts.
