Since we all seem to agree that Tsukiyama doesn't cause enough problems, I think he should steal one of these.

Some vampire: Hey, a food truck!
there’s a job for the labs here where you transport blood samples in a van and I think that’s pretty cool
2025 Black History Month Day 14 Charles R. Drew (1904-1950)
Charles was born into a middle class black family in Washington D.C. in 1904. He grew up in an interracial neighborhood and went to integrated schools. He graduated from college in 1926 and was a professor of chemistry and biology at the HCBU Morgan College in Baltimore and saved up so he could go to medical school. For med school he went to McGill in Quebec. There he worked under a professor who was studying the use of blood transfusions in addressing shock. He earned his MD in 1933. He continued his studies with postdoctoral work earning a DS in Surgery at Columbia. Charles continued his studies with the doctoral thesis "Banked Blood: A Study on Blood Preservation.' Only through his research into blood plasma did we realize the duration which plasma would be able to be stored as well as the possibility of dehydrating and reconstituting plasma. He began volunteering annually at the Tuskeegee Free Clinic. In 1940 became the first black man to earn a DS in Medicine. He developed the procedures for blood to be collected and stored before being sent to the UK during WWII. In 1941 he became the director American Red Cross' first blood bank and developed the first bloodmobile. The blood was shipped overseas to help with the war effort. He was disappointed to discover first that blood from black people wasn't accepted, and once it was it was segregated from the blood of white people because it might cause disease. He understood the science better than anyone at the time and pleaded that there was no scientific or medical basis for this before resigning in protest in 1942. In 1944 he was awarded the NAACP's Springarm Award. In 1950 he was driving to Tuskeegee, AL to volunteer at the Free Clinic when he dozed off, rolled his car and died. The AMA in Washington D.C. only allowed white doctors to join until 1950 and so he was never allowed to be a member in his lifetime. Also in 1950, the American Red Cross reversed its decision to segregate blood by race. May we remember the way he used his brilliance to help others and use our own brilliance in a similar manner!
This week, we are starting a new series for Black History Month about influential Black scientists that history has left out. First up is the father of the blood bank, Charles Drew. Check it out and subscribe!
