Helping Hands

Robert Hawkins, though still tired from their sudden move to Gotham City, talked on and on about the city, it’s history and some of it’s major achievements.

Virgil, also tired from their sudden move, didn’t hear a word of it. Because of their sudden move, he ended up draining himself both physically and mentally, poorly suspecting that using his powers to help pack everything he’d need would save time.

He was right, but at what cost? The cost of having no energy and not having gotten to a place where he could jump start himself.

“Here we are!” Robert pulled into a neglected parking lot. “The Gotham City East Side Soup Kitchen! I figure while we’re here, we could get to know some of the people working in our fields.”

“Great.” The younger nearly fell asleep as his father left the car.

“I know you’re tired, Virgil, but this is the best time we have to get you some connections within the city! It’ll help you get a job, grow your personal network and could keep you in the know when something goes down.”

He knows his father is right. Of course his father is right. It doesn’t make him less tired, and it didn’t make it any easier to stand.

The familiar smell of cooking canned food was quick to wake Virgil up, though the sight of the overcrowded building did nothing to raise his spirits.

“There’s so many people here.”

“And it’s just the morning rush.” A middle aged man walked over to the pair, giving a warm, tired smile as he extended a hand to them. “Welcome to the East End Kitchen, one of the busiest soup kitchens in Gotham.”

“Pleasure. I’m Robert Hawkins and this is my son Virgil. We’re here to offer our aid, if we can. Maybe a few helping hands?”

“That’d be wonderful.” The man sounds almost too relieved, and spends little time offering a conversation to Robert and ushering Virgil off to help in the actual kitchen.

It was fine. Not like he wasn’t tired already.
