One thing that kinda gets on my nerves about SOME Stardew Valley selfshippers is that they insist that their f/o is better than yours.

The amount of times I've had other Stardew Valley selfshippers come to me like, "but what about [character name]? They're so much better because xyz.." is kind of astonishing. It's disrespectful - at least to me, to come up to someone and claim that their f/o is the "wrong choice" or what have you. I've tried to explain to them why I love Shane, but then they start attacking his character and it's just so tiring dear LORD. I know they don't have bad intentions but it just gets on my nerves so I just end up ignoring them for my own peace at mind.

I'm glad that you love Harvey because he's nerdy, or Penny because she's a sweetheart, or Sebastian because he has a pet frog, but none of that is for me. I love Shane, and nothing is going to change that.

Notes : I didn't know how to end this. I think that's really obvious this time around.

Spring was always one of Toby's favourite seasons, with how it finally brings back warmer weather without being too overwhelming. Since he first moved to Pelican Town last year, he learned the hard way to utilize the warm weather as much as possible, lest he'd be stuck outside in the unbearable heat all summer with barely a dime to his name or have dead crops all winter just barely getting by.

On top of all that, the spring always brings back all the flowers and less bulky clothes. He always admired the various colours and the way they somehow manage to change the allure of wherever they grow. It makes him jealous how they’re universally loved and considered beautiful specs of nature’s art, wishing deep down to have bits of that beauty for himself.

Toby walked through the forest just behind his farm, feeling grass get stuck between his hooves for the first time in what felt like forever. The gentle breeze felt so refreshing after such a long day of planting crops for the new season, cooling down his sweat-glazed body beneath his dirty clothes. It felt nice to finally have some down time again in more pleasant weather, able to bask in the knowledge that he finally got something productive done after months of hibernating.

He walks along the dock built above a pond, the aged wood creaking beneath his hooves. He carefully sits near the edge, putting some space between the edge and himself so he doesn’t fall. He can’t swim and it’d be embarrassing as hell if he drowned out here over being a dumbass.

His ear twitches as he listens to an oncoming set of feet from behind him, slowly walking onto the dock and stopping next to him.

“Mind if I join you?” Shane asks, his voice more inviting than it used to be.

Toby looks up at him and smiles, squinting and raising a hand to block the sun from getting into his eyes. Over the last year, they’ve become extremely close. Having gone from complete strangers to close friends in a year, something that the pigman didn’t really anticipate happening with someone who seemed so adversely against the idea of having anything to do with him. Of course, he’s not complaining.

“Yeah, of course!” Toby patted the area between them before turning his head away to get the sun from glaring in his face, listening to Shane slowly sit himself down.

The two sat in silence for a moment, taking in the scenery with each other’s company. Leaves gently waved in the gentle spring breeze, pushing dandelion seeds into the air to help them spread. It was nice before when it was just Toby taking in everything, but it feels better to have someone with him to give him company. It’s less lonely with someone else by his side.

“I would’ve thought you’d be off in the mines or something,” Shane said, breaking the silence between them.

“I would’ve thought you’d be home or at the saloon.”

Shane pauses a moment, his fingers fidgeting with his sleeves. He had a really bad problem with alcoholism so much so it was impacting his mental health, using it as a crutch rather than an occasional luxury as it should be. Toby’s had to watch the worst of it, but it’s been a few weeks since then. “I’ve been cutting back lately. Been drinking a stupid amount of sparkling water actually.”

Toby smiles at the news, patting Shane’s back a little. “Hey, good for you, man! I’m so proud of you!”

Shane scoffs, a bashful grin on his face as he turns his head away.

“Yeah, well. It’s something.”

“Something’s a start. These things take time, but you’re doing so well already!”

“Yeah.”

Silence again. There’s a bit of awkward tension between them, but it’s mostly resonating from Shane’s own inability to accept praise. Maybe he’ll be able to some day.

Shane fidgets with a flower he picked, spinning it between his fingers. A tulip that he likely bought from his work at Joja Mart. He took a shaky breath as a means to calm his underlying nerves before turning his head back towards Toby. He places a hand on his shoulder as he pushes the flower behind the pigman’s ear, hiding the stem under his thick brown hair to keep it from falling. After it was in place, Toby looked over at Shane, who had a small blush crawl up onto his face. The light blue hue of the tulip brought a splash of colour to Toby’s appearance that he really needed, considering he’s wearing nothing but dark clothes.

“You look nice,” Shane musters out, though he’s unable to keep himself from turning away and trying to shrink himself as much as he possibly can.

It was cute to see this big, rough man try to shrink himself. He’s such a sweetheart, Toby couldn’t help but to smile so wide at him. He puts a hand on Shane’s shoulder, leaning over and pressing a gentle kiss to his cheek.

“Thanks. So do you.”

Another moment of silence falls between them as they both reflect on their actions and the feeling of being accompanied by each other. Their hearts race in their chests as their minds fill with unspoken thoughts, things that they could but yearn to say to one another. Shane leans over, resting his head on top of Toby’s as the sun slowly starts to set.

i feel like shane would like 5 guys. or mandarin. very high class restaurants [sarcasm] , but most actual "fancy" restaurants have food that i wouldn't eat even if i had 6 figures. mandarin's just my favourite all-you-can-eat buffet and 5 guys has really good milkshakes. we are very simple men with very simple desires.
