Blue Trees

While this isn’t very scientific or about tree identification, the Blue Trees are part of an important movement that needs to gain ground. With spring-like temperatures in January, monstrous storms killing around twenty people in Chattanooga’s nearby neighbor, Georgia, and a new Presidential administration that refutes the facts of climate change, we need more people to take stock in the environment that nurtures us. We could continue to inspire change through fear, listing the myriad avenues towards total destruction. Or, like the artist Konstantin Dimopoulos, we can highlight the everyday beauty that surrounds us. These photos were taken last year at Riverfront Parkway and the Bessie Smith Cultural Center on MLK, which are high traffic areas for locals and tourists. Eyes from near and far are drawn to the environmentally and biologically safe electric-blue paint; hundreds of people cast their gaze on these trees every day, forcing them to at least have a passing thought on the natural world. Instead of taking the fire and brimstone approach to environmental activism, it may help to redirect that energy and passion towards the aesthetic appeal of nature. The downside remains, but amplifying nature’s magnificence will lead toward a positive, long-term change.
