Films that made my decade:
2010
Blue Valentine
Dir. Derek Cianfrance
“You always hurt the one you love, the one you shouldn’t hurt at all”.
From the same director that made “Place Beyond the Pines”, this film illustrates the tender heartbreak that comes from falling out of love. Ryan Gosling is superb as per usual in this film. He toughs on your heart strings by accurately personifying heartbreak and the loss of love. I watched this when going through a break up of my own, and it make me cry for days after watching the film. My eyes were blinded by tears throughout the film, however, I still managed to appreciate the incredible aesthetics of the cinematography. The symbolism of blue lighting along with the title reflects on the mood portrayed in the film, which is that of the solemn loneliness and pitiful sadness of losing love. This was a sentimental 10/10 for me and it made 2010 a lesson learnt in love.
Black Swan
Dir. Darren Aronofsky
“I think everyone has a little black swan in them, it’s just a matter of when you let it out”.
This film is all about the detriments of striving for absolute perfection. It displays how society has shaped a woman to strive for perfection, but their perfection is a lie. It is an unreachable perfection that most people loose their minds over. Natalie Portman spirals into the dark hole that is the lie of perfection. She just wants to be the best ballerina in her class. All she wants is perfection. The source lies in the idea that there is no such thing as perfection, and that what makes us perfect is our flaws. This film taught me to let go of the idea of perfection and to accept that my flaws are what makes me the artwork that I am. Natalie Portman’s character is such a good human, and when she turns into the black swan she imitates everything bad in society- which is what makes her dance routine as the black swan thrive to absolute perfection. This film depicts the beautiful duality that is good vs bad and that the one cannot function without the other. So we should not only accept our flaws but we should thrive in them, because they make us what we are.
The Runaways
Dir. Floria Sigismondi
“All my life I’ve wanted to be somebody, and here I am!”
The Italian-Canadian director is a woman who is someone to look up to. She’s one of the coolest women in cinema I have ever seen. Her style is dark, edgy and cinematically beautiful.
I fell in love with this film because of its rock n roll and it’s hardcore take on the music industry. The cast is a matriarchy of talented women such as Kristen Steward and Dekota Fanning. It’s a film about the legendary band and woman Joan Jett, alongside the lead singer Cherie Currie. It is based on the book Neon Angel A Memoir of a Runaway by the band's lead vocalist Cherie Currie. This film gave me goosebumps because it shared style and perspective of the woman that I am. It made me appreciate women even more and made me so happy to see the determination, style, and talent of women is our world. “I’m a wild one”, the song and the meaning made me appreciate my wild side and embrace the awesomeness and relentlessness of rock and roll. The determination these women had to destroy the patriarchy and tell those filthy men that women can rock harder than they do. This film gave me that euphoric sensation, and made me think “fuck yeah!”
Tell me how I should be. Just tell me. I’ll do it.
