DISTRIBUTION AND THREATS TO TWO THREATENED PHEASANTS IN THE BREIN NISHAT CONSERVATION RESERVE, KASHMIR, INDIA | UTTAR PRADESH JOURNAL OF ZOOLOGY
In the Brein Nishat Conservation Reserve (BNCR), Jammu and Kashmir, India, two pheasant species, Himalayan monal (Lophophorus impejanus) and Koklass pheasant (Pucrasia macrolopha), were surveyed at an average height of 2300-3400m (7545-11155ft). The Himalayan monal was largely observed via transect walk, while the Koklass pheasant was mostly observed by dawn cry count. The majority of the observations were in densely forested areas with coniferous vegetation and grassy debris. Pheasant threats were linked to anthropogenic pressure in the BNCR's outskirts, followed by predator threats.
