Iraq's football association is due to finally hold long-postponed elections for its board Saturday, following threats from the sport's global governing body that postponing them any further risks indefinite suspension. IFA board elections have long been plagued by chaos and allegations of political meddling, with polls originally held in July 2011 marred by claims of malpractice, while efforts in recent months to finally hold a new vote have been blighted by multiple delays and apparent threats of violence. The never-ending crises, which mirror the standoffs and deadlocks in Iraq's national politics, have overshadowed a rare issue with cross-sectarian appeal in a country grappling with fragile communal ties amid deteriorating security. I always keep forgetting to write how I feel about elections... Well, better late then never.

I feel like people don't grasp the purpose of elections.  Or pro-con.  Or discussion.  I feel like people say things just so they can hear themselves speak.  The points they make aren't even relevant to the conversation, or are invalid points.

The whole point of elections is to vote for people who you believe would be the best fit for the position.  Don't vote for your friend unless they prove that they're worthy of the position on how they present themselves during their speech.  Don't let your bias or friendship get in the way of your vote.  That's not how elections are supposed to go.

Pro-con.  This isn't really much of a problem.. unless people state useless pros and cons that shouldn't even affect how people are supposed to vote.

Discussion.  This is the part that kills me.  This is the part where you can see everyone's bias.  When people say they give a non-biased answer?  Utter bullshit.  Everyone in AASU is biased.  Hardly anyone knows how to properly contribute something that's worthy of saying.  If you really want to present yourself as unbiased, you do the thing I like to call "The Sandwich Method" (shoutout to my high school english teacher for telling our class this method).  What you do is you say one "nice" thing, typically a pro about their work ethic or what-have-you, followed by a con they have, and then end on a "nice" remark.  Don't beat around the bush and repeat things that have already been said.

You know who did a FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC JOB doing that method?  Name-twin.  She was the only one that I heard do discussion right.  And you KNOW should could have been biased towards one of the candidates, but she wasn't.  TEN FOR YOU NAME-TWIN.  YOU GO NAME-TWIN.  And none for AASU, bye.

DON'T BASH THE CANDIDATES OR SPEAKER.  DON'T BASH THE CANDIDATES OR SPEAKER. DON'T FUCKING BASH THE CANDIDATES OR SPEAKER.  I do not give two shits if their voice makes your ears bleed because you know what, they might have useful points to make.  I don't care if hearing them talk makes your blood boil.  When you start attacking the candidate or speaker's personality/point, you look like a total ass.  In front of everyone.  And don't use tones that come off as if you're attacking the person either.  You aren't helping prove your point.  You'll just look like a bitch who's biased towards one candidate over the other.

Don't make invalid points.  Not only will you look stupid for saying something that isn't true, it doesn't look good for you or your org (if you're an officer).  Don't make up shit.  If you aren't sure, don't say it.  Get your facts straight first.

I could go on, but I'll stop here.

Don't even get me started on this unity nonsense.

Why did you join the board? i knew APIRG through being involved in other organizing, hearing it's name mentioned in countless meetings as an invaluable resource and community hub. i had to see how i could be help out in such a rad space.

What do you love about APIRG? i love the people that it brings together, and the space we're given to work on ourselves while making real steps toward positive change

  What event/project of APIRG’s are you most excited about this semester? i'm most excited about the gender-based violence monologues, Stories We Don't Tell.

  What is the role of a board member at APIRG? board members need to guide APIRG in its overall vision, while at the same time assisting the staff to carry out that vision. we have to know what the bigger picture and the details might look like. or at least be willing to work those things out together.

  What have you learned working with APIRG?

i have learned that self-care is not optional or to be added as an afterthought. self-care needs to be built into the very fabric of the work we do. we need to live and breathe it.

  Awesome dream you have for APIRG to do? conducting edmonton-focused, community-based research, toward an end of being a major resource for social justice activists and organizations seeking support in lobbying governments for resources for the important work they do.

  Any suggestions/advice for people thinking about  joining the board? getting involved in APIRG? be honest with yourself about the time you have available for being on the board. it is 100% worth the time commitment and you get out way more than what you put in, but it works best if everyone comes to the table knowing how much they can commit and how to take care of themselves while doing it. 

    interested in being a board member? elections are coming up in march.
