Confronting ICE: A Guide For White People
The other day I was approached by an ICE officer at work. Full disclosure: I’m white, the officer was not a threat to me, and he left without incident. Still, it wasn’t really how I expected a confrontation with ICE to go down, and I thought I’d post to warn other white people who want to help protect their immigrant coworkers.
How to recognize that they’re ICE: they’re not going to drive up sirens on in full riot gear like you see on the news. In reality, they might not even tell you they’re ICE. They’re going to drive an unmarked car, and they’ll probably be dressed in a normal police officer’s uniform. If you’re white, you were probably raised to always trust and respect the police, but times are changing and you need to be suspicious.
The questions they’ll ask: They will probably ask something about your company or coworkers, but they won’t mention race. For instance, I work in the agriculture industry where it’s common knowledge that most of the people hired as field workers are undocumented immigrants. The guy who approached me asked when the detasslers will get to the field. Despite not mentioning race, he asked for the whereabouts of a group that is predominantly undocumented immigrants.
How to respond: It’s understandable to want to get angry at them, but remember that the name of the game here is protection. You want to get them away from your workplace as soon as possible and prevent them from coming back. Tell them you don’t know where your coworkers are, or you aren’t in charge of those decisions. If you also work in the ag industry, know that the fields you’re working in are usually private property. Tell them that it’s company policy not to let guests onto the property without express permission from your boss, so they will have to leave and request permission before coming back. If you work in another industry, learn the policies related to approaching unwelcome guests. Be polite, but firm. They will most likely leave without any problem. If they don’t, know your rights and ask to see a warrant signed by a judge.
tl;dr: If you’re white, and you see ICE attempting to hurt immigrants, you need to do something to stop it. You have a lot of privilege at your disposal, and they are not a threat to you. I welcome reblogs with tips or corrections, since I know my experience alone isn’t representative of all ICE officers everywhere. I especially welcome actual Hispanic people who obviously know more than me about the effects of ICE. I just want to spread the word. I really hope this helps.
The self-described master of the art of the deal is a very sore loser.
" ... President Donald Trump, the self-described master of the art of the deal, is feeling sore. First, he shut down the US government for an unprecedented 35 days to bully congress into agreeing to his ludicrous demand for a $5.7bn border wall. Now, he has instead been forced to agree on a spending bill that allocates less money to his private obsession than he would have secured had he not held the whole country hostage, and used the livelihoods of 800,000 federal government workers, who did not receive pay during the shutdown, as a political pawn. ... “
2017 you have turned into a wild ride
History will repeat itself in front of our eyes if we do not do something.
