a gem from the twitter feed this fine monday morning
Can we support him please?!
I would love to share this with everyone who may happen to see this post. Please support this wonderful human being. He spent nearly a half century in prison for a crime he never committed. And the only thing that kept him going was his artistic endeavors. He deserves the best life can offer anyone ❤️
HERE IS A LINK TO HIS WORK
so funny to me when white american christians are like “ooh i incorporate my religious trauma into my art and thats why i draw these stained glass gothic church gold multi eyed reneissance sculpture angels agnus dei” like i know your protestant southern california ass didnt have any of that. go make some art about this
Damn way to read the assignment and go above and beyond.
the bleakness and sanitized feel of most American protestant churches really is an underused medium.
idk why tf the images were deemed to be ‘violating community guidelines’, but here’s what this post used to look like
not now kitten. daddy's realizing that the scene he invested 1000 words into could be significantly improved but only if he started over from scratch
happy glorious 25th of may

Do they know?

look at me. listen to me. this is directed at americans for the record. the reason you think North American animals are boring is because you live here. there are so many cool and beautiful animals here. we have beavers. we have wolves. we have moose. we have sea lions. we have armadillos. we have mountain lions. we have alligators. we have foxes. we have bighorn sheep. we have manatees. we have bears. we have ocelots. we have BISON. and that’s not even touching on the birds! or the turtles! or the snakes! we have amazing beautiful and diverse wildlife right here and it deserves to be appreciated and protected
Possums are the only North American marsupial, they eat ticks and keep down cases of Lyme, and they can't carry rabies! We only have two native boa constrictors; the rubber boa and the rosy boa! Bison and the American Alligator are LITERAL MEGAFAUNA LEFT OVER FROM PREHISTORY!
When I was a teenager, I was hiking with my family on Cape Cod. I was not a willing participant to these hikes; I would've preferred to be back at our rental cabin with a book.
But my parents were birders, so hiking we did go.
And about a mile up the trail, a woman came rushing up to us, clutching her binoculars to her chest. "Come quickly," she said, with a British accent. "You have to see this!"
This is what birders are like. They are as excited about a life bird as any fan would be spotting their favorite celebrity. You have to see, you have to.
So my parents rushed off with her, and I plodded along behind them.
To find a cluster of Brits huddled in a bird blind, staring at..
A blue jay.
A goddamn blue jay.
And I was a teenager, but I knew better then to mouth off in front of my mom. So I nodded, and smiled, and bit my tongue, until an elderly man looked at me with tears in his eyes, and said, "Isn't it BEAUTIFUL?"
And I stopped. And looked at it. The way they were. As if it were new. And damned if they weren't right.
I think of that, to this day. That sometimes, you need to step back, and see the world as if it were new. Strange, and haunting, and beautiful, so beautiful.
Isn't it BEAUTIFUL?
I just had an argument with someone who was like “why would we settle for food stamps when we could have universal basic income?”
And it’s just like. People need food right now you know.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Hippie church moms donating quinoa chips to my local food bank have done more for me materially than any internet idealist ever has.
People get pissed at me for being a pragmatist in my political ideals but I’ve been in the position where I was out of food right now.
And who helped me with that? Not people calling for some nebulous revolution. Not people telling me that the system was useless. Not people preaching at me to grow my own food. It was a church food bank partially funded by the state of Texas that some southern hippies donated a bunch of Whole Foods nonsense to.
And you know what? I’m sick and tired of defeatism. What can we get done right now, huh? Are you gonna accept something a bit better to help people right now or are you waiting for your perfect utopia to come to you?
Yeah, UBI is better than the quinoa chips. Sure. But right now the quinoa chips are stopping people from going hungry and if all we can do is get the food bank quinoa chips to more people, then I say so be it. That’s something. I’ll almost always take baby steps over nothing.
I feel you, Artoo.
May the 4th be with you, tired people of the universe.
California is phasing in a program to give free diapers to new parents over the first few weeks of their baby’s life so on the off chance anyone has a new family member coming in soon and lives in California you might wanna see if your hospital is one of the first ones on the program. I think there’s 25 participating right now and they’re looking to expand it to almost every birthing center in the state in the next few years.
The republicans that were against this were like “we have an affordability crisis why are you spending state money on diapers”
Well maybe free diapers can help some of the people affected by the affordability crisis, genius.
A lot of local and state governments in the US are willing to do good things believe it or not. California and other states like Florida, Oklahoma, and Vermont also have universal free preschool and New York City and the state of New Mexico are in the process of implementing universal free childcare.
This is why I keep telling people to pay attention to their local and state politics. The US is a federation. The federal government has a lot of power but it doesn’t rule us directly. A ton of stuff is fully determined at the local and state level.
If you care about issues like providing services to new parents or better urban design and transportation or affordable housing or providing homes for the unhoused or quality of education especially you should get involved in local and state politics.
i can't do this anymore guys. dostoevsky never wrote this. please. can anyone hear me. if you do proper research the earliest version of this quote is from like a 2010 facebook quote with a magenta flower on it. it's gotten so bad that it's even credited to him on goodreads but nobody can source where he wrote it because he fucking didn't. i can't keep seeing this in your web weaves. dostoevsky the author of crime and punishment did not in fact write "you were destined for me. perhaps as a punishment". that is just simply not true. please nod and tell me you understand
"this quote was attributed to me. perhaps as a punishment." -dostoevsky
my friend wanted me to make this
“I don’t like this song because I can’t relate to it” skill issue. I’m mad at my husband I love my girlfriend I’m a lone cowboy I’m growing old I’m growing up I’m depressed I love my friends I’m perpetually horny I’m drunk at the club I love my husband again
this is exactly what I’m talking about
Why are we forgetting the old texts
top notch interaction I had with the ambulance crew after my accident a couple years back:
paramedic: hi, I'm Allan
me: you told me. and your colleague is Jim, and the man who found me is Peter. guess my short-term memory is okay
Allan: ..are you doing a cognitive function test on yourself
Allan, two minutes later, putting a third blanket around me: okay, how's that feeling now
me: well my feet are still freezing but it's okay, I know you need to focus on getting my core temperature up first
Allan: how many times has this happened to you
noteworthy that they literally had a mask on me hooked up to a tank pumping narcotics into my lungs through all this, and my body temperature was like 34°. I would have been doing well to just have both eyes pointed in the same direction
"This is great. I'm going to get a good grade in post-accident cognition."
