Bob had spent the entire morning ducking into corners like a man with something to hide, which he absolutely was, and setting up the new automatic sandbox he'd ordered off Amazon. The money came from that thing with Alexei at the dive bars—not a scam, because Bob had told those guys he could take them, and they'd laughed, and then he'd done exactly what he said he would, and they'd stopped laughing and started paying. He'd used the cash for the sandbox because he'd noticed nobody cleaned Alpine's box as often as they should, and that bothered him in a way that sat heavy in his chest, like a rock he couldn't swallow.

When Yelena walked in, Bob's eyes went wide and he spun around, hands flying up like he'd been caught mid-heist. "Me? Hiding? No, no, that's—that's not what's happening here." His voice pitched higher than he wanted it to, and he could feel the heat crawling up his neck. He gestured vaguely at the sandbox, then at the cat, then at nothing at all. "I'm just... making sure Alpine's comfortable. She's got standards, you know? And I'm a man of standards. That's all this is." He was not, by any measure, a man of standards. But he said it with such conviction that he almost believed himself.
