Salambit - Bobby Enriquez (1981)

Bobby Enriquez, child prodigy from Negros, Philippines, learned to play the piano at the age of 4 and by 14 was a professional.  He moved to Los Angeles in the late 60′s, playing for the Filipino Vegas show band called The Sunspots before moving to Hawaii where he played for Don Ho in the 70′s.  He eventually met saxophonist Richie Cole during touring.  He recorded with Cole before venturing off on his solo career recording eight records for Crescendo Records.  Known as “The Wild Man” for his frenetic hyper piano playing, Enriquez was lauded for his technical abilities and energetic performances.

“Salambit” is an original track taken from his 1981 LP, The Wild Man and is backed by bassist Abraham Laboriel, drummer Alex Acuna and conga legend Poncho Sanchez.  Enriquez’s fast and fiery piano style is in full effect on this Latin tinged cut.

And now some music! God I love the theme song of The Pink Panther. This version is played by the jazz pianist Bobby Enriquez and I WANT THE PIANO SHEETS FOR THIS!!! BUT I CAN'T FIND THEM GODDAMNIT!!!! GAHHH!!!

If anyone knows where you can get the piano sheets please let me know. PLEASE!

Bobby Enriquez was an apparently well known Filipino jazz pianist. I haven't heard of him until the other day and I'm glad I did. An internationally known artist nicknamed "The Wildman", he simply was amazing and was as wild as many critiques claimed. I wish that he was still alive today. Hopefully I can meet or see other jazz or classical Filipino performers one day.
