Adecor and Boccos trudged through the cavern sullenly. Being a knight wasn’t all fighting and parades. Today, they were inspecting a far-flung Imperial asset.
Though, calling it an “Imperial” asset only reflected current ownership. Somebody else had built the warp blastia, but no one -- not even any of the Guilds -- had wanted to claim it when it had been discovered just before the Last Battle.
It was supposed to be deactivated. Its core was gone, converted with all the rest of them to power the sword that defeated the Adephagos, but that apparently didn’t mean anything.
“With the Zaude barrier gone, the rest of the universe is leaking through,” Captain Leblanc had told them when he briefed the brigade. “At least one of them connected to another planet at random. Because of your experience preparing for the Last Battle, you’ve been chosen to survey the known warp gates.
“Each team will be assigned a gate, and one of these.” He held up a dull black box. Prominent on it was a switch and an indicator dial.
Adecor and Boccos reached the warp gate. There was no mistaking it; it was a large and complicated pentacle inscribed with a warp formula. Boccos produced the black box from his pack.
“Are you ready?” he asked.
Adecor nodded in response.
Boccos set the box just inside the pentagram as they’d been instructed, and flipped the switch. Nothing exciting was supposed to happen; they’d record the readings on the dial, and then deliver the information to Capua Nor.
Instead, the pentagram lit up; its formula casting a pale blue glow. A humanoid figure began to form in the center of the gate.
“I say ...” was all Adecor could manage.
