Bodcast - Episode 6: What Happened in Japan 2.0
A brief thingy about the current Divas scene.
When people think of the Divas division in the current incarnation of the WWE many think poorly of it to say the least. Many folks view Divas segments as opportunities to check in on Monday Night Football, make a snack, use the bathroom, etc. Others see it as an opportunity to ogle and objectify women who they feel have little to no in-ring value. What people don’t see when they look at the Divas division is a pool of growing talent that have finally been given something meaty to bite in to. Which is unfortunate because they totally should. While it’s true that talents like Summer Rae get bogged down in storylines that utilize them as an accessory as opposed to an actual human being, others such as Paige and the Bella Twins are actually being given programs that allow them to exist not just as arm candy, or as shrieking wenches, but as actual people with actual, relatable characters and character flaws.
Okay, maybe the Bellas are still painted as shrieking shrews, but you see what I’m driving at right? It’s not just a story about jealous girlfriends fighting people who want to be jealous girlfriends, it’s an actual story about sibling rivalry being exploited by a corporate entity for a more nefarious reason. It’s a story where, while one sister is clearly being painted as a the good guy and the other the bad guy, each character has reasons for feeling the way they do that actually make sense and aren’t dependent on their beauty or some dude to drive it forward. I have a sibling and I can attest that this is the first time that the WWE version of the way siblings resent each other and the way they really do seems to be about on par. They see the same situation from two different vantage points! They blame each other for the other one getting preferential treatment! They weaponize their love for eachother! It’s just like Thanksgiving at the ol’ Phenom residence, except with less hurling of insults about who went to prison or who took how long to graduate college. Also neither of them seems to have had to gotten stoned just to get through dinner.
The point is this, even a story that might not have be the most stirring or have the best acting talent is a step in the right direction. So often the beginning of a movement will be a little rocky and a little difficult to navigate. As is the case with so many things, botched execution is fixable, complete absence of opportunity is not. Many people point to the thriving NXT women’s division as what’s going right with ladies in the WWE. TNA is setting up to tell some interesting stories in their Knockouts division with some of the matches Gail Kim and Taryn Terrell have been putting on, and now with the arrival of Jessica Havok, giving their Knockouts division a woman who can fit the monster heel role that is so absent in women’s wrestling today. With the pressure coming from TNA and an abundance of talented wrestlers and story tellers waiting in the wings down at Full Sail one can only hope Divas scene has better stories and a more prominent role on TV coming down the pike.
