The word 'yoga' means union and unity, referring not only to the union of separate parts with one another but also a unity within the complete human existence. The yoga practitioner strives to achieve a state of being where all opposites and tendencies within her or his being are reconciled into a state of unity. This applies to the outside world as well. To call oneself 'yogi' is to imply the desire to unify all those around us, human and energy alike. A yogi is not someone who can touch their toes while breathing through their nose, not in clothing, jewelry, or tattoos. It is an honorable word that has been adopted by a culture that does not practice what it preaches, but that does not diminish the honor of the word. It only gives the humble yogis more to practice. There are yogis and there are bogis. You can see in a smile what it is we strive for.
