Been obsessed with the band Boisson Divine lately. Not even a huge folk metal guy but their music is just so fun, the melodies are memorable, it actually has good riffs, and despite me not being able to speak a word of occitan the songs are still incredibly catchy! Cant wait for the new album, i fully trust that it'll be just as good as the 3 we already have.
@xirae tagged me to put my repeat playlist on shuffle and post the first 10 songs but since i do not use spotify i'm just gonna post 10 songs
instead of just picking 10 i've been listening to recently tho i want to maintain some of the chaos and whimsy so i'm just going to put my entire bandcamp library on shuffle and find the youtube links to put here
1: song for mountains, les discretes
some good chill blackgaze to start us off (you might sense a theme here)
2: tróndor í gøtu, tyr
good old singalong folk metal. no i don't speak faroese but this song is so catchy and i've listened to it so many times that i can more or less manage
3: Lou tard-biengùt, boisson divine
a slower more laid-back song from their excellent folk metal album la halha
4: subject nation, akira kosemura
a little incidental BOP from one of my favorite otome games - the whole soundtrack is such a banger i bought it on bandcamp. was very tempted to spring for the vinyl but it was too expensive
5: GET OUT, pinkshift
i love pinkshift! one of my favorite modern punk bands. they're just about to start a new tour and i HIGHLY recommend going to see them live if you can, i saw them a couple years ago in detroit and had a blast
6: nom the wise, blind guardian
more incidental music, i guess that's the danger of shuffle. this album is peak blind guardian and blind guardian is peak power metal, if you like power metal and haven't heard nightfall in middle-earth stop everything you're doing and listen to it front to back right now
7: beneath the waves, ayreon
ayreon is a prog metal concept project from arjen anthony lucassen featuring every metal musician you know and love and it rules
8: mettänpeiton valtiaalle, korpiklaani
more folk metal. korpiklaani is just FUN. they're also touring right now with ensiferum and trollfest and i definitely recommend seeing them live - i'll be there for their detroit show next week!
9: against the stream, insomnium
emotional support melodeath, i love this entire album
10: nancy drew, sløtface
another fun punk song. "i've filled my quota of boys with acoustic guitars / but more are born every year" lives in my brain rent-free.
tagging uhhh @songofsaraneth @alimsurana @burgerdrome @xdaringdamselx and @if-only-angels-could-prevail. and also you, the reader of this post, do this if you want to, i always want more music to listen to
can’t make a phone call right now, I’m listening to gascon folk metal, my ears are busy
Up-and-coming folk metal
This is my very short quality-over-quantity list of my favourite promising, half-discovered folk metal bands of the moment.
Boisson Divine (France)
I have to look up the name of their language every time. It’s a regional language - not a dialect - called Gascon. Clean vocals, a melodic and pleasant sound, but without sounding generic or commercial, this is music I can listen to every day.
Utmarken (Sweden)
Utmarken have actually been among my absolute favourites for a couple of years already, but I’m including them anyway, because their first two albums are criminally underrated and it seems they’re starting to gain more traction with the third one. A mix of folk, power and heavy metal with great clean vocals, the nyckelharpa or “keyed fiddle” as solo instrument, and, despite the often dark lyrical subject matter, tons of energy and drive.
They also have an even more nyckelharpa-centric heavy folk sister project called Norrsinnt.
Kallomäki (Finland)
Kallomäki have a darker sound than the other entries on this list. What’s characteristic about them is the home-built electric tagelharpa that plays a central role in their songs. Imagine if someone took Korpiklaani’s music, killed it and brought it back to life as an undead monstrosity. That’s Kallomäki. Uh, I mean that as a compliment.
Zmey Gorynich (Russia)
This band from Moscow is definitely the strangest entry on this list. I discovered them on VK by coincidence one day. Try listening to an entire album of theirs and you will definitely be surprised a number of times by the sudden, often comedic twists and turns the songs take. They’ve got growls, they’re got symphony, they’ve got... schlager? Fun fair music..? They... I don’t...
Fun. They have fun.
Je vous offre une boisson rafraîchissante 💋
