The truth behind psychology
When you think of a psychology do you immediately picture a room with a day bed & a psychologist with a notepad asking the client, “How does that make you feel?”.
Most of us assume if you study psychology, that’s the only career outcome - so let’s burst this common bubble of misconception & explore a few facts about psychology...
1. THE STUDY OF BEHAVIOUR
Psychology is the study of the mental processes and behavior. The term psychology comes from the Greek word psyche meaning "breath, spirit, soul" and the logia meaning "study of."
2. NORMAL & ABNORMAL
Psychology not only examines abnormal behaviour but also normal behaviour. After all, how would we know what is considered abnormal...?
3. PSYCHOLOGY GOALS
Psychology looks to describe, explain, predict, modify & improve the behaviours of people. The four major goals of psychology include:
To describe human thought & behavior
To explain why these behaviors occur
To predict how, why & when these behaviors will occur again in the future
To modify & improve behaviors to better the lives of individuals & society as a whole
4. MORE THAN ONE CAREER OUTCOME
While many pursue careers in the professional practice of psychology including clinical, organisational or forensic psychology, counselling, clinical neuropsychology, health & community psychology, research, & other specialist areas, a degree in psychology benefits fields like human resources, management, marketing, research, teaching & more.
