This week's newsletter is full of Israeli solutions to global problems. They include detection of heart and lung problems caused by COVID-19; preventing rejection of bone-marrow transplants; complex surgery to save lives; peace initiatives, a UN COVID-19 conference; new COVID-19 disinfectants, toxic algae removal, securing websites, monitoring babies and support for those affected by the global pandemic. Lately I have been feeling well enough to finally start exercising again! I have been going for walks to try to keep my body active still, but I haven’t been able to truly work out the way I used to. Today, using helpful videos and these fancy 3lb weights and exercise band that my sister gave me, I was able to work out for 30 minutes! 

It is definitely beginner status, but that’s okay =) I feel grateful that my body can even do anything right now. The further into my recovery process and the more I try to push myself, the stronger I will get and pretty soon I will be back to normal!

Actually I won’t be back to normal...I will be BETTER than normal because now I will have the blood counts of a NORMAL person!

I can’t promise myself any sort of workout schedule because every day is different for me, but I will certainly try to exercise at least a couple times a week!

Just as a side-note: my boyfriend, Louie, and I were talking about this the other day...but because of my abnormally low blood counts, my entire life I have learned to operate on a certain energy level that is significantly lower than an average person’s. Now that I have an average person’s blood running through my body, my energy level will eventually be at an average person’s level and that makes me really excited!

If I am already used to effectively and efficiently operating on my current energy level....imagine what I will be able to with an average person’s energy level!!! 

Anyway,

I NOW HAVE TWO BIRTHDAYS!!!

So after a long time of planning, the doctors finally gave me the final schedule for the transplant! May and June are going to be super super busy months. I’m practically going to the hospital every single day for preliminary tests, chemotherapy, blood transfusions and then finally the bone-marrow transplant! I am nervous but I am feeling confident in myself that I’m ready for all of it. June 14th is Day 0...my new birthday! I say this because I am receiving a brand new immune system and therefore will basically be like a new-born baby again! Lil baby Gracie =) What’s funny is that I will even have to get my immunization shots again at 9 months! LOL.

CYTOTOXIC EVALUATION OF MITOTIC CHROMOSOME ANOMALIES IN MICE (Mus musculus) INDUCED BY SYNTHETIC DYEING WASTE | UTTAR PRADESH JOURNAL OF ZOOLOGY

The present study was carried out to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of the silk dyeing industry effluents on Mitotic Chromosome Anomalies in Mice. Silk dyeing processes release various waste streams and these are capable of contaminating the environment, posing health hazards to the biota. There is paucity of information on dyeing waste of silk industries effluent induced cytotoxicity in swiss albino mice (Mus musculus).

Four to six week old laboratory bred Swiss albino mice (Mus musculus, male) (S-cdri, 2n = 40) seed colony obtained from Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow, India. Animal were orally administered @ 1 ml/animal/day for seven consecutive days. The mice of control group were given only 1 ml distilled water/animal/day that is equal to the used for diluting the waste.

Swiss albino mice were orally administered 1 ml day of dyeing waste of silk industries for seven consecutive days to see genotoxic effect on bone marrow cells. Mitotic chromosome abnormalities were increased with increasing the concentration of dyeing waste. Among the gross type of changes C-mitosis, precocious separation and stickiness were more common, acentric fragment, minute fragment, chromatid break and chromatid gaps were more frequent in structural type of abnormalities. Thus the frequencies of individual (Structural) type were more prominent than gross (mitotic disruptive type). Free radicals of dyeing waste may affect chromosomal DNA at either the sugar of the base. In this way it produced more clastogenic damage with respect to the gross type (mitotic disruptive type) which is induced by the interfered with the spindal and another protein.

Sorry I haven’t posted on here in a while, but I wanted to wait until I had some good news! On Day 81 of my transplant recovery (yesterday), my doctors finally unrestricted my diet!!! In the usual recovery program, most patients have to wait until day 90 or 100 to have their diets unrestricted, but I had lost 10 pounds quickly due to loss of appetite so they needed to release my diet earlier. I am SO excited, all I’ve wanted for the past three months were some vegetables, fruits and FIVE GUYS! I had my mom go to the grocery store (yup still quarantined for the next nine months) to pick up these fresh fruits and veggies and I had Louie go to Five Guys after work to pick me up a burger and fries! I have to be honest and say that this is the hardest period of my life and every day is different mentally, emotionally and physically but I have to just keep reminding myself that there is a bigger picture to all of this and that I have done something great for myself and my quality of life moving forward! This process is long, exhausting and scary, but it’s important to celebrate the little things….like getting to eat veggies again!! With the help of many people, I am finally able to purchase my new laptop so I hope to keep you all updated more frequently in the future! Much love and gratitude, Gracie
