James always kept little secrets from you — nothing bad, nothing worth arguing over.
Just small things, like how many donuts he actually ate on the way home, or how he definitely watched that cheesy sci-fi movie you loved before pretending to "hate-watch" it with you.
You figured he was just like that. Full of surprises.
But you weren’t expecting this one.
It started when you lost your phone somewhere between the couch cushions. You reached in, digging through pens, spare change, a pack of gum — and found a notebook.
Old, leather-bound, the corners frayed like it had been handled a thousand times.
Curious, you flipped it open.
And froze.
The handwriting was unmistakably James — a little messy, a little rushed, but warm somehow, like he was trying to capture things before they slipped away.
It wasn’t case notes or grocery lists.
It was a story.
Your story.
There were no names, but the descriptions were too vivid to be anyone else.
The way you insisted on doing the dishes even when he offered.
The way you scrunched your nose when you laughed too hard.
The night you fell asleep on his shoulder during a stakeout.
The morning he realized he was in love with you.
You turned page after page, heart hammering harder with each word, until you heard the front door open.
"Hey, babe," James called casually, kicking his shoes off. "I got Thai. Hope you’re in the mood for—"
He stopped mid-sentence when he saw the notebook in your hands.
The color drained from his face.
"You… found that," he said slowly, setting the takeout on the table like it might break.
You could tell he wanted to run. Or hide. Or rewind time and shove the notebook deeper into the couch.
"I did," you said softly, still cradling the notebook like it was something precious.
Because it was.
James scrubbed a hand down his face, looking everywhere but at you.
"I wasn’t—I mean, I didn’t think you’d—" He blew out a breath. "It’s stupid. Just something I do when I can’t sleep."
"It’s not stupid," you said.
Your voice cracked a little, and you hated how emotional you sounded, but you couldn’t help it.
"James, this is beautiful."
Finally, finally, he looked at you.
The guarded look in his eyes slowly melted into something raw and honest.
"I just wanted to remember everything," he said quietly. "In case someday I didn’t know how to say it out loud."
You crossed the room without thinking, the notebook still in your hand.
When you reached him, you stood on your toes and pressed your forehead against his.
"You say it just fine," you whispered.
James pulled you into his arms like he never wanted to let go.
Maybe he wouldn’t have to.
Not when you already knew every word in his heart.
Ok I’ve never written fan fiction in my life but I’m so tempted to give it a try. Bones x reader, if anyone has any prompts? It’ll be absolutely terrible but I need to start somewhere right? 🥺
OK and last one (maybe) a Leonard one with "Let me help you!"
You jumped when you heard the loud curse from the main sickbay. You leaned your head out and saw Leonard holding his hand, blood seeping through his fingers. “What the hell happened?”
“Someone left the shears open in this drawer and I cut myself.”
You sighed, “I’ll get a kit,” you turned to leave and he called you back.
“I’m fine. It’s fine.” He now had his hand wrapped in his shirt as he headed to the supply cabinet.
“Doctor McCoy, please, that looks serious.” You stepped in his way and he started to skirt around you.
“I’ll handle it, check on Jameson in room 3.” He spoke grabbing a cleaning kit from the supply closet.
“Damn it, Len. Let me help you!” You grabbed the kit out of his hand and pointed to a bed. “Sit.”
“Y/n.” He groaned but you just stared at him. “Fine.” He hissed and yanked his hand away as you started to clean the wound, “Son of a bitch that hurts! Be gentle!”
“Don’t be such a baby,” you grabbed his hand back, drying off the skin before reaching for the dermal regenerator. “This is going to take more than one pass. I’m going to have to wrap it and you’ll need to see me tomorrow.”
“I can handle the rest of my sessions, nurse.”
“Len,” you chastised. “Stop being difficult.”
He started to smile, looking up at you, “Haven’t you heard? Doctors make the worst patients.”
“Don’t help the stereotypes,” you told him, trying your best not to smile.

Have been a couple of years since you’ve started dating the CMO Leonard Mccoy. Back then, when you accepted dating him, you knew he was going to be busy most of time on the medbay and that there would be days you wouldn't be able to speak to each other. But those little things didn’t bother you, the few moments you could have together were worth it.
This time you were also stuck on the engineering deck for two weeks adjusting the new pieces of upgrades you and Scotty got for the engine modulator. The enterprise wasn’t going anywhere until you fixed the engine, and Scotty needed you focused on the job. He knew your mind was elsewhere and it was asking for a time to rest. Scotty, as your supervisor, ordered you to take the weekend off, and gave you two ticket to go to a karaoke bar offshore to ease our mind.
“Com’on, lassie. They say that this bar got healing properties, and not only from the alcohol, I assure you that! Oh, and you should call the doctor to go with you, lass. They say it’s a very romantic place ”
“I‘ll give it a try, Scotty. Thank you.”
You get back to you quarters only to find Leonard sleeping on your bed with his stomach down, flattened face on your pillow. You try not to laugh even when he’s too cute sleeping. You go to your bathroom to change into your sleeping clothes. Getting back to the bed you hear his drowsy voice calling for you, he keeps still at the same position being too tired even to open his eyes. “I’m here, Lee. Go back to sleep”
He rolls to the side, stretching his arms trying to reach you “C'mere, darlin’...” he asks with a soft lazy southern voice. You lay beside him kissing his lips softly “Go back to sleep, love” you whisper to him. “I missed you.” he embraces you, rubbing his face on your neck, with a pleased smile as he could smell you sweet perfume again. You caress his face, trying to make him go back to sleep. But he insist to stay awake to be with you, asking “What’s your plans for tomorrow, sweetheart?”
“Well, Scotty gave me the weekend off.”
“Good.” He closes his eyes again, his hand reaches yours, covering your fingers with his. There’s silence on the room for a while. Then you whisper “If you’re free tomorrow, Scotty gave me some tickets to a karaoke bar, wanna come with me?” still silence. You ask him again to check if he’s still awake. “Yeah, i need a break” he answers and hugs you tighter. Few seconds later you can hear a soft snore coming from him. Not so long after, you also get to sleep, his warm embrace is like sleeping pills to you and you really needed to get some rest.
On the next day he wakes up first, prepares your breakfast and stay with you on the bed until you wake up. “Mornin’, Y/N!” he kisses you on the lips. “Hey…” you scratch your eyes with the back of your hand, taking a few seconds to sit on the bed. “Aren’t you going to work today?” you ask, yawning. “Nah, I gave myself a couple of days off. Couldn’t get a night of sleep since that damn fungal infection spread on the botanical lab! So, what are your plans for the weekend?” he seems really energetic after a long night of sleep.
“After lunch we're going to that karaoke bar Scotty told me” you tell him like he was supposed to know already.
“Karaoke?” he lift his eyebrow, his voice seems frustrated
“Yes, you said you’d come.”
“When did I ever say that?”
“Yesterday! At night, on this very bed” now you seem frustrated
“Oh, c’mon, darlin’. I was as sleepy as a zombie last night, I wasn’t even thinking of what I said”
“But I told Scotty I’d go, I can’t just refuse this. It would be like throwing a gift on the trash”
“If you don’t wanna throw it, i can do it for you.” he teases you, but he really was up doing it.
“Lee...” your voice was serious, almost threatening
“Sweetheart, you know I’m not good at those stuff“
“No, I don’t. Never saw you singing before! And anyway, I’ll be the only one there. You don’t need to be scared! Please, Lee. If you come I’ll do anything you ask” you know how to do those puppy eyes, begging him.
“Anything?” his eyebrow raise with interest.
“Yes! Promise!” you make a sign with your fingers swearing to it, giving him a teasing grin
~
Getting near the bar, you spot Chekov with a date on the line to enter. “Oh, Y/N, Dr. McCoy! Good to see you here!” he waves from far. Bones whisper on you ear “Great, even the rookie is here to watch my shameful misery”. You pinch the back of his arm and give him the look. You go meet Pavel and after he introduces you to the alien girl he’s with, he tells you everything about the bar and about the owners’ specie “You see, they are basically humanoid-slugs that echo beautiful tunes from their antennas to communicate, and they believe that singing is a way to relieve from dark and negative energy. They use singing as healing waves even to cure from illness and injuries.” Leonard seems to be interested in something for once “As medical treatment this should be interesting” He adds.
When you enter the bar you are astonished by its beauty. It looks like a sanctuary, full of well detailed antique statues and beautiful ornaments. An attendant comes to you, asking you to follow her, you can hear her voice echoing inside your heads, and it’s like a soft melody. She takes you to a room and explains how the equipment works, there’s also a food synthesizer inside room, so you could ask anything you wanted.
Surprisingly, you see Chekov on the room next to yours and the, he waves at you so you could see him. Bone changes into his grumpy mood immediately. “Watch it, Lee. You might be all drained by the magic echoes being this negative” you tease him. He takes a deep breath trying to calm down “I might need that drink earlier today. Why don’t you start the singing thing? So we can see how it works” he goes directly to the food synthesizer and asks for his bourbon. “Ok, let’s start with an easy one” You grab the microphone and type the song you want to try. It’s a soft melody.
You close your eyes focusing on the intro, feeling the sweet melody through your ears. Leonard sits on the couch, with his glass of bourbon on his hands. He takes the glass to his mouth almost at the same time you begin to sing. The time your voice hits him he keeps still, glass on his mouth, he even forgets to drink and not even notice that he spills some of the bourbon on his own shirt.
[X] - Love Like You
If I could begin to be
Half of what you think of me
I could do about anything
I could even learn how to love
When I see the way you act
Wondering when I'm coming back
I could do about anything
I could even learn how to love
Like you
I always thought I might be bad
Now I’m sure that its true
‘cause I think you’re so good
And I’m nothing like you
Look at you go
I just adore you
I wish that I knew
What makes you think I'm so special
If I could begin to do
Something that does right by you
I would do about anything
I would even learn how to love
When I see the way you look
Shaken by how long it took
I could do about anything
I could even learn how to love like you
Love me like you
As soon as you finish the song, you feel relieved for some reason, your back wasn’t hurting anymore for being those past weeks working on the ship’s engine. Your eyes reaches for Leonard, and he’s frozen with his glass on his mouth, he just notice the stupid pose after you look at him and giggle at the mess he had done on his shirt. You run to aid him, laughing “What happened, sweetheart?”
“I don’t know... I was stunned! Amazed by how the whole melody suited you.” his eyes meet yours, and you press your lips against his. He pulls you to sit on his lap. His arms warp around your waist. “And as a doctor, it’s my duty to ask: how’re you feelin’?” Your hands cups his face, bumping your nose on his, feeling his breath on your lips, you kiss him with a long slow kiss, feeling his soft lips on yours, reaching for his tongue. He gives in, kissing you passionately. Slowly the kisses turn into soft slow, your words passed between your lips in the middle of them “I've- never- been- better-” You take the glass of bourbon from his hand. “I guess it’s your turn now”. He puffs, still not liking the whole idea “Now that I was beginning to like the place”.
He goes to the panel, picks up the microphone. You sit on the couch drinking his glass of bourbon. “Oh, c'mon, darlin’... That’s really not fair!” He protests with frustration on his eyes biting his lips. “You can ask another after this. Go on!” Leonard spots Pavel spying from the other room, nobody ever heard the CMO sing before, he was quite curios. “Good, I’ve even got a crowd now.” He check the list of songs, and there are lots of new pop hits he never heard of “Lee, stop complaining and choose the song already.” it comes to him an idea.
As soon as the song begins you recognized it immediately, is one of those classical rock songs from XXI century you loved to hear. He got you listening couple of times, he knew you loved that song, the lyrics weren’t hard either.
[X] - Like a Comet
Some say I have no direction
That I'm a lightspeed distraction
But that's a kneejerk reaction
The first words seemed to be trapped on his throat. He was worried about Chekov on the other room and how everyone on the Enterprise would know about this next day. You wave at your boyfriend calling his attention to you, and move your finger on the direction of your own eyes signing him to keep his eyes on you, and only you. He takes a deep breath as his eyes reach yours. For that moment on he feels more relaxed, as there were only you on that whole place.
Still this is the final frontier
Everything is so clear
To my destiny I steer
This life in the stars is all I've ever known
Stars and stardust and infinite space is my only home
His voice was as gorgeous as his handsome face. A deep strong tone took place of those scared insecure words from the beginning. At the chorus he takes a chance to sing louder. You were melting with all that attention, his eyes on yours, singing your favorite song, and his gorgeous voice echoing on the room like he was sharing all his feelings for you. Your heart was flushed with emotions you had never felt before. Unfortunately, that moment didn’t last forever, the song ended, but your passion for that man in front of you only increased.
But the moment that I hit the stage
Thousands of voices are calling my name
And I know in my heart
It's been worth it all of the while
And as my albums fly off of the shelves
Handing out autographed pics of myself
This life I've chose isn't easy
It sure is one heck of a ride
At the moment that I hit the stage
I hear the universe calling my name
And I know deep down in my heart
I have nothing to fear
And as the solar wind blows through my hair
Knowing I have so much more left to share
A wandering spirit who's tearing it's way
Through the cold atmosphere
I fly like a comet
Soar like a comet
Crash like a comet
I'm just a comet
You’re staring at him with a big smile. He goes to you with a disappointed look “I know it was bad, don’t need to laugh at me-” he complains but you cut him off. “No, silly! I’m just in love with you!!” You grab him by his shirt, bringing his lips to yours. You both couldn’t explain but there was something more going on there, the kiss was intense, you felt a fire deep inside and a need to be with him. He tries to speak while you attack him with deep kisses “Can we- go home- now? You owe me something” “Just one more! Please...” you beg
You choose a song to sing with him this time. He got to enjoy when you both were together doing this. That ‘last one’ actually turned into much more than ten or twenty until you notice the time, you were both sleepy. It was time to go. This was one of the most enjoyable nights you both had together on these past months. You both were laughing and enjoying each other company, as all the love you felt for the other has blossomed into something more.
Heading back to your quarters Leonard holds you on his arms “Y/N, remember when you said I could ask you ANYTHING?” You nod placing your arms over his shoulders. “Yes, anything”
“Marry me” his face was serious when those words came out of his mouth. He didn’t even hesitate while saying it. You took a minute to process what he had said, and began to laugh.
“It’s not a joke, darlin’” an one sided smile emerges on his face.
“Are you sure you’re going to waste your ‘anything’ on this?”
“Why…?” his voice was now trembling in fear of being rejected
“Of course I was going to say YES, silly!” you give him a long desirous kiss
“Good! So, do I get an ‘anything’ bonus for those last twenty songs you made me sing?”

Thank you for reading =)
Intro: So I am slipping in from my hiatus just to give you this Valentine’s Day gift that came to me one day this week. I am still going to stay on hiatus for at least another week, because I am going on vacation, but I will be back after that! It is kinda nice being away for a little while, but I miss you guys. Have I written any more of Wherever We Are? Nope. But after today I have a little more freedom and maybe some brilliant ideas will come to me. Anyway. HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY GUYS! YOU GUYS ROCK.
This idea actually came from one of my 1,300 follower prompts that was requested by @shewhorunswithfandoms! Sorry it took so long but I used your setting of: Buying Flowers for the Other and prompt: You’re and idiot. I’m an idiot. We’re the co-presidents of Club Idiot.
Pairing: Leonard McCoy x reader
Word Count: 2,112
Summary: Valentine’s fluff. That’s all.
A/N: I am such a slut for the friends-to-lover trope.
-Enjoy!-
“Happy Valentines Day, Y/N.”
Without looking, you extended your middle finger to the source of the voice, eliciting a low chuckle from him. Lifting your head, you saw the smiling face of your best friend, Hikaru, whose eyes were glinting with amusement.
“Fuck off, Su.” You quipped, dropping your hand.
His smile faded into a smirk at the nickname you knew he hated, and he crossed his arms over his chest. “I came by because I thought I’d let you know that a certain doctor-that-you-won’t-admit-you’re-in-love-with is Valentine-less this Valentine’s Day.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” You grumbled, ducking your head, but knowing that your flaming cheeks gave you away.
“Sure you don’t.”
“Shut up. I don’t care.”
“Sure you don’t.” He tapped the desk in front of you.
You lifted your eyes and he gave you a knowing, pointed look before turning and striding back to his spot in the Bridge.
You took a shaky breath and pressed your cool fingers to your burning cheeks as you thought of the grumpy doctor.
Leonard was one of your closest friends, having met him back in the Academy in your Xenobiology class when he spilt coffee all over your notebook half-way through the year. “Fucking hell” was the first thing you ever said to him, and you’d spent the rest of the week with him, copying his notes to replace all of yours. You’d been friends ever since, ecstatic when you’d been placed on the Enterprise with him, and you had a weekly drink and movie night.
But you didn’t have a crush on him. You thought. There was one time when you’d been watching a movie next to him on the couch, and you’d been shoulder to shoulder, and he turned his head and so did you, and for a second you’d thought he was going to kiss you, and you could feel his breath on your face, and for a second you’d hope he’d kiss you and…
A ping from your PADD woke you from your memories, and you could feel your pulse pounding in your ears.
Looking down, you saw two messages that made your heart drop in your chest.
Leonard: Have to cancel drinks tonight. Busy medbay.
Leonard: Sorry.
Damn. You cursed yourself internally at how disappointed you felt.
Y/N: It’s all good. Stay sane.
‘Stay sane’ was something you always said to each other when things got crazy. It meant a million things, like ‘don’t work to hard’, and ‘I’m here if you need me’, and ‘don’t do anything stupid’.
Part of you was excited to have a night to do whatever you wanted, the other part of you had been looking forward to having something to do on Valentine’s Day. But most of you had been excited to spend time with Leonard.
But whatever.
That was all over now.
You finished your shift without any issues, and when you made it back to your room, you decided to throw together a batch of cookies for a treat.
You just happened to make the kind that were Leonard’s favourite.
And you just happened to pile them into a container and head out the door towards the medbay.
I’m just being nice to my friend who has to work late, that’s all, you thought to yourself as you rounded the big glass doors.
“Hey, Y/N.” Someone called, and you spun to see one of your friends, Amy, who was a nurse.
“Hey,” you responded, “is Dr. McCoy here?”
“Nope, his shift ended about an hour ago.” She said, tucking the PADD in her hands under her arm.
“Oh.” You chewed on your lip and self-consciously held the box of cookies tighter.
You were just about to say something else when your com pinged.
Hikaru: Botany lab. SOS.
Shit.
“Gotta go! See you later, Amy!” You called over your shoulder as you dashed back out the doors.
A million things were going through your mind. What was the SOS about? Was Hikaru alright? Why did Leonard lie to you about having to work late? Did he have a Valentine’s date he didn’t tell you about?
You were ashamed at how disappointed and stupid that made you felt.
It took you a good 5 minutes of fast walking/jogging to make it to the botany lab, and you had broken out in a light sweat by the time you got there.
You rounded the corner quickly and nearly slammed into another person.
“Oh!” You jumped back, almost dropping the box of cookies.
It was Leonard.
“Y/N!” He exclaimed, looking particularly flushed and disoriented by the sight of you.
“Hi, umm, is everything alright? Sulu sent me an SOS.” You tried to peek over Leonard’s shoulders to see into the lab, but he stood awkwardly in the way.
“He did?” Leonard asked, looking perplexed then annoyed, turning his head to the side and muttering something that sounded like ‘fucker’ under his breath.
“He just left for the Bridge.” Leonard looked back to you, his hair falling onto his forehead, and a frown pulled at the corners of his lips. He shuffled just a bit and it was the first time you noticed his hand tucked behind his back, as if he was hiding something.
“Wha-?” You started.
“Are those the cookies I like?” Leonard interrupted, squinting down at the container.
“What, these?” You stammered, tucking the box under you arm. “Well… yes. But-but they were for Hikaru.”
Leonard’s brows furrowed and he shifted his weight from one foot to the other. “I thought Sulu was vegan. Don’t those have eggs in them?” He questioned.
You felt your eyes widen, and you tried to control your facial expression as you responded, “Y-yea…nnno…maybe…” You tucked the box further under your arm. “What’ve you got there?” You asked, pointing to his hidden hand, trying desperately to change the subject.
He looked hesitant for a moment, before withdrawing his hand and producing a magnificent bouquet of flowers. There were white roses mixed in with full-bloom peony heads in a soft pink, interwoven with white baby’s breath and contrasted with dark green ivy.
“Wow.” You breathed. Peonies were your favourite. You could smell them from here.
Leonard didn’t say anything, just held the bouquet awkwardly in front of him.
There were several beats of silence, and you felt your disappointment grow with each passing second. “You could have just told me you had a date,” you said softly, dropping your eyes to the floor, “I wouldn’t have cared.”
“No, it’s not- it’s just- I…” Leonard was stammering, more flustered than you’d ever seen him before.
“It’s fine, I get it,” you defended, turning to leave, “I should go find Hikaru.”
“Y/N, wait.” Leonard’s hand found your elbow and spun you around, not letting go. He took a breath and squeezed his eyes shut before he continued, “They’re for you.”
You blinked at him, shrugging off his hand on you and stepping back, “No, you don’t have to give them to me just because you don’t want to tell me you’re going on a date. I don’t want your pity flowers.”
To your surprise, Leonard held your gaze, and you watched as his face softened, just a little. “I’m not giving them to you out of pity, smartass,” he grunted , “they were for you the whole time. I was bringing them to you as a surprise, for Valentine’s Day. I know they’re your favourite and I just- I thought… yeah I guess it was pretty dumb.” He dropped the flowers to his side, and you watched a few peony petals glide to the floor.
It took you a second to process everything he said. “You-you’re being serious?”
Leonard lifted his gaze to you and nodded.
“I’m an idiot.” You huffed.
He shook his head, “No, you’re not…”
You pointed your finger at him and grinned, “I’m an idiot. You’re an idiot. We’re the co-presidents of Club idiot.”
That made him chuckle and you could almost feel the tension dissolving between the two of you. What was left was a softer, gentler feeling, something from deep inside you.
“Sulu helped me pick them,” Leonard explained, “The amount of flowers that man grows should be illegal.”
Now it was your turn to chuckle.
You took the container of cookies out from under your arm and let it hang between your fingertips. “I did make these for you. I swung by the medbay to bring them to you because you were working late.”
“That was really thoughtful of you.” The softness in his tone surprised you, and you met his hazel eyes, seeing something flash behind them that you hadn’t seen since…
“Do you remember that night you made me watch ‘The Princess Bride?” Leonard asked, leaning against the wall, and you moved to join him, leaning to face him.
That was the night you thought he was going to kiss you.
“Of course. The night you cried because you thought Wesley and Buttercup weren’t going to be together.”
“Ha ha.” He smirked, then let his features soften. “Well, I don’t know if you would remember this, it was a while ago, but when we were on the couch, and… well…”
“I remember.” You said, and his gaze snapped to yours.
“You do?”
“Mhmm.” You licked your lips and looked up at him, taking in the face you knew so well, framed by dark, slightly tousled hair, the lines around his eyes and mouth soft, and the space between his eyebrows was smooth, though you knew his brows seemed permanently furrowed when he was stressed.
“I wish I had done what I had wanted to do then…” He said, his gaze flicking between your eyes and your lips.
“Which was…”
“Kiss you.”
The fingers that you were drumming on the top of the container of cookies stopped, and your mouth fell slightly open.
You chose your words carefully. “So, why didn’t you?”
He exhaled. “I didn’t think it was the right time.”
“Ah,” you nodded, looking down. “So, when is the right time going to be?”
A soft smile ever so slightly pulled at the corner of his lips. “You only know it’s the right time when it is the right time.”
You smiled and rolled your eyes. “You’re such a romantic, Leonard McCoy.”
His eyes glinted with amusement as he smiled fully now, and your heart overflowed with love at the sight. He dropped your gaze and played with the petals of one flower between his fingertips, rolling it between his thumb and index when it plucked free.
You gathered up all your courage and inched closer to him. “What if I told you right now was the right time?”
He stopped playing with the flower and looked at you, his expression unreadable. “That’s not how it works, Y/N.”
“Oh shut up.” You quipped, cocking your head to the side and taking a confident step forward, a sudden bout of nervous excitement causing butterflies to take flight in your stomach.
His whole face softened, and he was looking at you with an expression of such admiration that you wished you could capture it with a camera. He leaned into you, now having to drop the bouquet at his side so he could stay facing you. His free hand lifted and his fingers grazed your cheek, bringing with it a strong scent of peonies and roses.
“Kiss me.” You sighed, your eyes fluttering closed as he pulled you closer, and you could feel his breath against your lips, just the same as that night watching that movie.
He paused for a second, and you became suddenly aware of your pounding pulse and your impending anticipation.
“As you wish.” He breathed, the words fanning over your mouth before he covered your lips with his.
His lips were firm and warm against yours, the taste of him immediately intoxicating you and you kissed him back with an equal fervor. You slung one of your arms around his neck, awkwardly dropping the box of cookie to your side in order to draw him closer.
The kiss was everything you had hoped for and more, and as his hand dropped to your waist, you felt your chest fill with desire.
You broke the kiss breathlessly, not straying far from him, holding him firm by the fingers entangled in the hair at the back of his neck.
“How ‘bout we take that bouquet and these cookies back to my room? Hm?” You asked, pecking his lips softly before continuing, “we can have those drinks you cancelled on me from earlier.”
Leonard laughed and shook his head, his nose rubbing against yours. “Sounds like a plan to me.”
But before you could lead him away, he kissed you breathless again, pulling away to tip his forehead against yours. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Y/N.”
You smiled, “Happy Valentine’s Day.”

Summary: Getting lost in the forest with the grumpy CMO is not the most ideal situation, but things soon take a turn for the worst when you are captured and taken hostage. The alien species interrogates you for information you don’t have, and there are harsh consequences. How will you ever find your way back home if you don’t even know where you are?

“Y/N. Get up.” It was Leonard leaning over you again, shaking your shoulder.
“Hmmm?” You stirred awake, barely able to fight the heaviness of your eyelids.
“We should get dressed before they come. I have a feeling they’d take us into that arena in our underwear, and I don’t think I’m up for that sort of humiliation today.”
You turned over in your little blanket cocoon and stretched, looking up at Leonard who had the blanket still wrapped around him.
“I don’t know, maybe showing them our hot bods will instill some sort of pity in them and they’ll take it easy on us.” You joked as you sat up.
Leonard huffed a laugh and shook his head.
“Or maybe they’ll be so disgusted by our weak, fragile, human bodies that they’ll decide we’re not even worth keeping around.” You continued, rising to your feet.
“Do you always wake up spewing so much sass?” Leonard asked, reaching for the wet clothes you had set out.
“Only when our lives are in mortal peril.”
You took your clothes from him, groaning internally at the thought of putting them on as they were still wet and freezing cold. The damp, cold environment in the cell was not conducive to drying clothes.
You just finished sliding into your frigid shorts when you hear the aliens start to come down the stairs.
Your heart skipped a worried beat and you looked over at Leonard, surprised to find his eyes on you, and his gaze warmed you on the inside for a moment.
“I’m sorry.” You mouthed, feeling your brows pull together.
He dropped your gaze for a moment before looking back at you solemnly through his brows. The look on his face was a thinly veiled mask over an expression of worry, and you were so focused on it that you jumped a little when he took your hand, giving it a quick squeeze between his thumb and fingers.
He dropped your hand as the aliens emerged from the stairs, and you felt yourself longing for more of his reassuring touch.
You were taken into the arena again, this time the room already filled with the dark aliens, and the cacophony of sounds was deafening. Your eyes fell instantly to the platform in the center, however, this time noting a large wooden chair on top of it, rather than the glass box.
Your heart clenched as Leonard was dragged and pushed onto it, his arms and legs being strapped down to it.
SNAP! The sound of Ch’al’s cane hitting the ground made you spin around and silenced the entire room.
“Welcome back, Sweet.” Ch’al’s taunting voice echoed across the arena.
Your mouth went dry and mind went blank at what to say.
“Are you going to cooperate today? Hmmm?” He hummed. “Shall I ask you again? I suppose I shall. Tell me everything you know about your father. Tell me where the Artifact is.”
You exhaled and set your jaw. You had thought about what to say this time, wracking your brain for anything regarding your father.
“He was an explorer. Or at least that’s what my grandmother said when she was still alive. She was the only one that would talk about him to me. She said he explored the galaxies, searching for new things and new life. I vaguely remember seeing a picture of him once in a Starfleet uniform. But that’s all I can remember. I swear to you that’s all I know.”
Ch’al regarded you with an even gaze, and you could hear your heart pounding in your ears.
“Where did he go?” Ch’al asked.
“Pardon?”
“When you were a child. Where did he disappear to?”
You blinked. “I-I don’t know. My mom picked me up from school one day and just said that he wasn’t coming home. She wouldn’t tell me where he went.”
“So you don’t know.”
Panic started building in your chest, and your hands started trembling. “No, she never told me where he went.”
Ch’al snapped his talons.
You spun to Leonard, gasping when you saw a dark figure approach him from behind. It was in the same shape as the aliens, but cloaked in long, dark robes from head to toe. Leonard was craning his neck to see it, but as soon as it centered behind him, his eyes squeezed closed, and he dropped his head, as if he was in pain.
“What are you doing to him?” You asked, your voice shaky.
“Maliika here is trained in the art of entering minds.” Ch’al responded. “And she may be able to add a few things or two if she feels like it.
Leonard shook his head side-to-side, as if he was trying to get water out of his ears, before he looked up to you.
“So, Sweet, you were saying your mother knows where your father went?” Ch’al sung, and you turned slowly back to him.
“I don’t know.” You said slowly, carefully. “I think she did, at one point.”
Ch’al gripped the arms of his chair tightly and snapped, “You are wasting my time. Explain, human.”
“She-she was diagnosed with schizophrenia when I was 18. It’s a… a human disease of the mind… that-that makes you see and hear things that aren’t there. It can make you have delusions, or symptoms of depression. Before I went to the Academy I got her placed in a psychiatric home, to have full time care. She still recognizes me, but her attention and memory are… spotty at best.”
Ch’al seemed to consider this for a moment, though his posture stayed rigid and tense.
“I do not understand this ‘disease of the mind’.” He said flatly. “I believe you are lying.”
Then he snapped.
It was not as dramatic as before, with the water rushing into the glass chamber, but still you spun to face Leonard, who was not looking around, not with a pained expression, but with one of confusion.
“Joanna?” The name left his lips as his eyes tracked something near the large doors. “Joanna, what are you doing here?”
You frowned deeply and rubbed your hands over your face in dread. You had no idea who Joanna was, but you knew this couldn’t be good.
“Let her go!” Leonard shouted, looking pained, his eyes fixed on a point behind you.
“Your mother must have told you where your father went. You cannot keep that secret from a child forever.” It was Ch’al’s voice now.
“I already told you, she never did. All I know is that he was an explorer and…”
“ENOUGH!” He yelled, snapping his fingers again.
“Jo? You monsters! Let her go!” Leonard was the one yelling now, and you turned to see him fighting against the restraints.
“Leonard, it’s not real,” you said, stepping towards him.
His eyes tracked an invisible object and seemed to land on you.
“Y/N?” He asked, and you thought for a second maybe you had gotten through. “Answer him. Tell him the truth. Please,” he begged. “That’s my daughter!”
Your heart dropped. “I am telling the truth. It’s not real, Leonard.”
“I don’t understand,” he said, and you could see the sweat dripping off his brow. “Why are you doing this?” He was fighting against the restraints even harder, pure panic filling his features. “NO!” He shouted, “LET HER GO! THAT’S MY DAUGHTER!”
“Tell me the truth and this all stops.” Ch’al’s voice cut through Leonard’s yelling. “Tell me where your father is. Tell me where the Artifact is.”
You turned slowly to face Ch’al, keeping your voice as steady and even as you could, “I’ve told you all I know.”
“PLEASE!” Leonard yelled from behind you.
A tear inadvertently snuck down your cheek. “I would tell you if I did, because it sounds really important to you, your species, and your planet, but I don’t know where my father or the Artifact is.”
Ch’al’s dark eyes bored into yours, and you swore he smiled as snapped his fingers.
“Oh, god.” Leonard’s voice was strained.
You pinched your eyes shut for a moment as you turned around, squeezing a few more tears down your cheeks. Leonard was staring at a spot a few feet away from you, his expression more desperate than you had seen on anyone, ever.
“Y/N. Please. Stop them!” He yelled, straining so hard against the restraints that he shook the chair. “They have a knife, oh god! Joanna! Let her go! Take me instead!”
That damn near broke your heart, and had to close your eyes and look away from him. You couldn’t watch him face whatever he was facing.
“NOOOOOO!” A scream tore from his throat so feral and so raw that you knew he believed every second of whatever he was hallucinating.
Leonard went quiet now, and you peeked your eyes open to see him, limp on the chair. Head drooped down, everything about his posture defeated.
“Take them back.” Ch’al commanded.
You heard the restraints unlatch from Leonard’s chair, and he was marched off the platform, trudging past you, escorted by guards, without glancing in your direction.
You followed, escorted by your own guards, and soon returned to the cell, void of your empty food trays and blankets, you noticed, as the guards left.
Leonard was facing the back wall, completely rigid, not moving except for his shoulder heaving with each breath.
“Why didn’t you tell him the truth?” Leonard’s voice was low and gravely.
“I did. I told him everything I know.”
“Your lies killed my daughter.”
Oh.
“Leonard, that wasn’t real. Your daughter’s not dead.” You said carefully, staring at the spot between his shoulder blades.
“But-“ he faltered for a second, “but I saw her die. You gave them the knife.”
“It was an illusion. A hallucination. Someone was in your head.”
“YOU’RE LYING!” He roared, but stayed immobile, breaths quickening.
“Please, Leonard. You have to believe me. If your daughter was there, I would have done everything to save her. I would have sacrificed myself to save her.”
He didn’t move. Stayed silent.
“Please.” You breathed, stepping up close behind him and reaching out to rest a hand on his shoulder.
Without warning he spun, knocking your hand away and shoving you to the ground, hard. The suddenness of the landing knocked the wind out of you, but nothing hurt more than knowing that he was still in pain, still believed the hallucination.
He had stalked to the far end of the cell now, grabbing shakily onto the bars before it looked like his knees gave out and he sank to the floor. It sounded like he was sobbing, or having a panic attack, his breath ragged, his body trembling. He stuffed the heel of his hands into his eyes and folded over in defeat.
You wanted to comfort him, you really did, but something about him shoving you to the ground scared you. You knew that when the mind lies it can really affect someone. You knew it better than anyone, especially, with your mom having schizophrenia.
Leonard stayed like that for some time, folded over, defeated, but you didn’t approach him. You tucked yourself into the opposite corner and stayed quiet. To give him his time to process everything.
Wishing you still had that blanket, you curled into the bars, shivering at the cool contact of the metal against your skin. At some point you dozed off, in a fitful, cool sleep, filled with dark, evil creatures and little girls with Leonard’s eyes.

“Jim, will you stop asking me about her? We’ve only been on two dates.”
“C’mon, Bones, I’m just curious! You like her, right?”
“Well it’s not like I’m thinking about marriage or anything, but I haven’t wanted to throw myself out the garbage chute when I’m with her, like I do when I’m with you, so that’s probably a good sign.”
“When’re you going out again?”
“This Saturday. Stop looking at me like that. We haven’t even kissed yet.”
The wine glass in your hand snapped, sending shards crashing to the table that you were white-knuckling, as well as one that embedded itself into your hand. Red wine splashed down over the front of your clothes, creating a murder scene of glass and blood.
The people nearest to you had stopped and turned towards you, staring open-mouthed at the crazy wine-glass murderer that stood wide-eyed at the far end of the table.
You stared at your hand for a moment, in total shock, before raising your head and meeting the eyes of the person who had caused you to snap.
Leonard.
That’s when the pain started to set in.
Your stinging hand was the final thing that made you snap out of it, made you draw your eyes away from the hazel ones you knew all too well, the ones under dark, furrowed brows, the ones that drove you crazy.
You cradled your arm to your chest carefully and dashed in the direction of the kitchen, not stopping until you found the very far back corner, a secluded section that was not being used for tonight’s gala.
You thrust your hand over the sink, tears in your eyes as you reached to turn the water on-
“Stop.”
You knew that voice all to well. It made your heart soar to the top and sink to the bottom of your chest at the same time.
“You should get the piece out before you run water over it.” Leonard said gently.
Your hand slowly retreated from the tap and you became acutely aware of how shaky it was. You stared down at your bloodied hand.
Get the piece out, you told yourself, just goddamn do it.
But you couldn’t. You couldn’t get your mind and free hand to communicate and let go of the steel rim of the sink you were clutching onto.
“I-I can’t.” You gulped, suddenly aware of the thick lump that had formed in your throat and the stinging pressure behind your eyes.
“Here, let me see.” Leonard was suddenly beside you, leaning his hip against the sink and tugging at your arm.
You let him have it. And he brought your bloodied hand to him and gently plucked the bottle-cap sized piece of glass out of it.
“There.” He breathed, his eyes flicking between your hand in his and your face.
You wouldn’t meet his eyes. “Thank you.” You said, turning away and starting to run water over your hand, glad for the pain to distract you.
The sound of running water was all that you focused on for a while, as Leonard moved away from the sink, and the water ran pink.
Eventually, you had to turn it off.
The silence rang in your ears until a white package appeared on the counter beside you, which you saw contained a large bandage that Leonard had somehow procured. You quickly applied it with shaky hands and felt the pain slowly ebb into a soft, pulsing ache.
“Are you alright?” Leonard asked softly.
You flexed your fingers over the rim of the sink which you were still facing.
“Fine,” you quipped, “thanks for the bandage.”
He didn’t respond, and there was another bout of deafening silence, which caused your mind to start churning and your jaw to start clenching.
“What’s wrong?”
Everything. You so desperately wanted to say. “Nothing.” You actually said.
“Y/N, c’mon, you can’t keep doing this.” He sounded tired.
Doing what? Loving you?
“Just go, Leonard.” You said, pressing your knees against the counter for support.
“Just tell me what I can do.” He insisted.
“NOTHING.” You insisted right back.
“Y/N.”
You heard his steps towards you. Felt his hand rest on your upper arm, and you snapped, shrugging him off quickly. He reached for you again, this time for your elbow, and you pushed him away again. Your forearm, you swiped away. And just as you were turning to push him, to get him away from you, he grabbed your wrist and spun you towards him. Your other hand instinctively came up as well, and he grabbed that one too.
He held your wrists, tight, at the level of your head, and looked down at you, hard, insistent, determined.
You were barely aware of the back of your thighs hitting the far countertop.
Barely aware of a soft ‘oh’ leaving your lips.
Barely aware of all your anger fleeing from your chest.
“What’s. Wrong.” Leonard said poignantly, his face inches from your own, the heat from his body radiating into you.
You were staring up at him through watery vision, on the precipice of tears, of breaking down, of falling apart.
“I miss... I miss...” You stammered, your words getting lost.
“You miss what, darlin’?”
Darlin’.
“I miss you.” You whispered.
There was a heartbeat of pause, a heartbeat of hesitation, but when his thumbs stroked the soft skin of your wrist, you were done for.
In a moment of pure, blind longing, you surged up and kissed him.
You expected to find resistance, to find stiffness in the kiss, but the instant your lips touched his, he melted into you. He released your wrists only to wrap his arms around your waist and back, pulling you flush to him.
The sensation of your body against his was enough to elicit a moan out of you, and he took the opportunity to kiss you deeper.
His lips were so familiar, the way he tasted and the way he held you ingrained into your memory, but this also had a fire to it that was just so unique, and so charged, that it left you breathless.
Your arms wound up around his neck, and you kissed him with every ounce of passion and love that you had.
And then he was pulling away from your lips, kissing down your neck and leaving fireworks in his wake.
When he made his way back to your mouth, you kissed him once before breaking it, pressing your forehead to his and holding his jaw in your hand, thumb running over his lips.
His arms were hot and tantalizing around you, body aflame and breath heating your fingertips.
“What are we doing?” You whispered deeply.
He shook his head softly against yours, making you smile. His hazel eyes were alight with a spark that you had not seen in a long time.
He smiled and kissed your fingertip before responding, “we’re continuing what never should have ended.”

Your cold, fitful sleep was interrupted abruptly by a sharp shake to your shoulder. You were instantly aware of your sore abdominal muscles and groaned, your eyes opening heavily and slowly.
"Hey, kid, get up." It was Leonard, who had straightened up and was now standing over you. "I think they're coming."
That really got you moving, pushing yourself up onto your hands, and becoming increasingly aware of the sound of footsteps reverberating off the stone walls. Your abs hurt with every tiny movement, and you grunted as you tried to get your feet under you. Hands quickly found your upper arms and Leonard helped to get you to your feet, keeping a grip on you as you steadied yourself.
A sharp voice made you jump, and you released Leonard's forearms as you turned to see dark figures enter the room.
Their whole bodies looked like they were made of scales, head to toe, covered in dark armour, punctuated by plates of gold. They had big scaly tails protruding from their backsides, and large, completely black eyes inset into their face.
You unintentionally took a step backwards as they approached the cell, and Leonard looked back at you, catching your eye for a second with a steady gaze.
"Humans!" One of the aliens shouted in barely discernible English. "You will come with us."
"Why are we here?" Leonard demanded.
"You will come with us." The alien shouted again, and one of them stepped towards the cell with a giant key.
"We're not going anywhere." Leonard took a step back, closing the gap between you and him and extending a hand that crossed over your front and gently touched your hip protectively.
"You will come with us." Three aliens entered the cell and advanced towards you and Leonard.
Leonard's grip on your hip tightened as they neared, and he stepped back, taking you with him. They smelt of sea water and the stench of rotting plants, and it only made your panic spike.
One of the aliens grabbed at Leonard, it’s taloned hands ripping him forwards and away from you. In the tightness of his jaw and the stiff steps Leonard took, you could tell that he wanted to fight back, but when he flipped around in the alien's grip to face you, you could tell he'd made a decision. To not fight back, to be docile in order not to get hurt. And his gaze he was telling you to do the same.
You gritted your teeth as the next alien grabbed you and held your hands to your back tightly.
Sharp talons were digging into your upper arms as you were escorted out of the cell and through the winding stone corridors. You climbed up several sets of wide stairs until you ended up at a large set of double doors. They swung slowly open with loud resounding creaks as you approached, and it made you want to put your hands over your ears.
The doors opened to a vastly large room, with towering ceilings and tall stone pillars. It became clear as you entered that is was more of an arena, with stone stadium seats lining the room, with larger, separated seats at each far end of the stadium. The ground was a fine gravel, almost sand, under your feet, and it made a soft crunching sound under your feet.
A barely perceptible cool breeze brushed across your bare skin and made you shiver. For a room with only high windows for light, it was surprisingly bright but the shadows that streaked across the room were very ominous.
You were pushed into the center of the arena, where there was a platform in the center of the room with a large glass box sitting on top of it. It was taller than it was wide, looking like the size of a stand-alone shower.
"Hey!"
You snapped your head around to see Leonard being shoved towards the platform. He was trying to wrench his hands free, digging his heels into the sand, but ended up being forced up onto the platform.
“What are you doing? Stop!” You yelled, trying to get free yourself, but you were no match for the alien’s grip.
Leonard was shoved into the glass box, which was quickly closed and sealed behind him, trapping him inside. He pressed his palms against the glass before slamming a fist against it with a bang, and you could see his shoulders rising and falling with heavy breaths.
His eyes found their way to you and he looked like he wanted to say something, and you wanted to say something too, but you had no idea what was going on. No idea what was going to happen.
With your attention focused on Leonard, you were distracted when two cold metal bracelets were clicked onto your wrists and you were released, arms falling separate at your sides.
Suddenly, there was a resounding siren echoing through the room. And without warning the empty stadium was suddenly full, the rows of empty stadium seats filled with aliens in a flash. The echoing silence quickly turned into an uproar of screams, hoots, and hollers.
Your heart was hammering in your chest and you felt panic and dread dripping through your system when there was a loud slam, like the bottom of a cane hitting the ground, and the entire room fell silent.
You spun towards the sound, and you could have almost laughed. It looked like one of those old medieval movies, where the king was sat on a throne, his guards standing at attention on either side. The larger alien in the middle held a long staff, with a sharp golden point at the top, and had on similar armour to the rest of the aliens, except his were more ornate, a deep green and purple, with gold accents. On his head was a line of gold that looked like a thin chain necklace draped over his forehead.
"Welcome humans!" The alien's voice resounded, loud and echoing through the large room. His English was much smoother and easier to understand than the other alien's language.
"I am Ch'al, the leader of this species." At that, the entire stadium erupted in applause and cheers.
Once it died down, he continued. "You look frightened. What ever is the matter?"
You stared up at him, teeth clenched tightly together, feeling your knees shake slightly out of fear.
His mouth curved into a sickening smile, sharp rows of teeth appearing behind his curled lips. "Speak, human!" He demanded, clicking his cane again, the sound resounding across the room.
Your tongue sat thick in your mouth and you blinked heavily before forcing the words out of your mouth. "Why-why are we here?"
"Very good," he taunted. "You are here, human, because of the Artifact." He said it with such reverence that the words resounded in your brain and shook you to your core.
What the hell was he talking about?
You curled and uncurled your fists at your side before raising your voice shakily, "What artifact?"
The entire stadium erupted in shouts of laughter, and you looked around, your breath ragged in your chest, dread soaking your nerves.
"Oh ignorant one," Ch'al taunted, "the Artifact that was stolen from us! The one that you came here to help us retrieve!" There was more sharp laughter, and it grated against your ear.
"We came here to retrieve a crashed ship." You said.
"Ah yes," he grinned, "we'll just call that a 'happy accident' that brought you to us, young one."
"What do you want from us?" You shouted, and the crowd fell into a sudden silence.
"Oh, I don't want anything from him." The alien gestured with his head towards Leonard, who was standing stoic when you looked over your shoulder at him. "I just want you."
Your heart pounded in your chest, and your palms grew sweaty. "What do you want from me?" You asked, not feeling prepared for what the answer was going to be.
"I want information."
Well that wasn't what you were expecting.
Ch'al looked down his nose at you, cocking his head slightly to the side before continuing. "We'll start from the beginning.”
The crowd fell into a silence again and a cool drip of sweat snuck down the back of your neck and made you shiver.
“Tell us everything you know about your father."
Your mouth went dry. A shiver drew down your spine. "M-my father?" You stammered, swaying slightly on your feet.
Ch'al's gaze was even and undeterred by your fright as he waited for you to continue.
"I barely knew my father," you gulped, "he left when I was six. I was raised by my mother."
"Child, you test my patience." His tone had suddenly switched from taunting to icy, and the crowd started shifting excitedly in their seats. "Let me show you what happens when you test me." He clicked his talons together as you would snap your finger and there was a sudden gurgling and gushing sound.
You spun around to follow the sound, and your heart contracted painfully in your chest. The sound was coming from the box that Leonard was trapped in, now about a foot of water soaking Leonard's calves. You saw true panic in his eyes as you both realized what was happening, and Leonard slammed his fist on the side of the box, shouting something that was muffled through the glass box.
"Let him go." You demanded, spinning back to Ch'al, fury and true fear sparking in your veins. "You don't want to do this."
"I don't?" Ch'al's voice was back to taunting. "I want information, Sweet, and this is how I'm going to get it."
It was then everything seemed to swirl in slow motion as realization hit you. This wasn't just a hostage situation. They weren't just going to hold you and Leonard captive until you were rescued. They wanted something. Something you were going to have give them. Something you didn't have. And they were going to torture Leonard for it.
