It was a long day for the Enterprise crew. Battling against Krall was surely exhaustive. Gladly, or not, The Federation summoned all fleet to Yorktown to get an update on new security rules. After Jimâs birthday party, the crew members were buying some time to relax and meet old friends from the Academy. For Jim, the shore leave suited like a glove, it was a precious time to meet new girls.
âOh, Bones, look all these new people to meetâ said Jim checking all possible female targets in sight
âYeah, really impressive⊠While you go out making ânew friendsâ Iâll try to find out where is the local pupâ Bones hits Jim on the shoulder, not impressed by his friendâs attitude. Jim understand perfectly that his old friend Bones wasnât the most enthusiastic pal to make new friends or meet anyone that was not in medical condition. âThank you for the party, Mr. Sensitive!â
The days passed as quick as they could imagine. The Federation Fleet meeting day has come, and Jim went to Bonesâ quarters to check on him since he didnât answered his comâlink by the morning. The door opens and Jim find his friend still trying to put his boots on. âI know Iâm late⊠Donât you say a word!â The same old grumpy. Being off shore without a medbay to look after was worse than being stuck inside a spaceship for years. The old bourbon and his bed made him company as those two days passed. Suddenly, he smells something funny coming from the captain. âDammit, Jim! Did you even took a shower? You smell like bouquet of jasmine and lavender!â
Jim smiled proudly âDidnât have time! Those Aenar girls know stuff⊠And i didnât knew they smelled like that when youâŠâ
âDammit, man! Spare me the details...â Bones stands up with some difficulties by the alcohol on his head, barely believing in his captainâs words.
âWe need to know all species, you know? Thatâs why weâre explorers...! Come on! Weâll be late for the meeting⊠Iâll tell you the details about Aenarsâ antennas on the way. And I think this perfume suits me well!â
âSure, if you want to smell like an old ladyâs bathroom...â They both leave the room heading to the main building
Getting there, the corridors were confusing, Jim hadnât sleep last two days and Bones was drunk enough to not see where he was heading to and they couldn't find the way that leads to the meeting room. Jim was telling his friends all the details of last night, against Bonesâ will, of course. Suddenly some unknown female voice reaches them âExcuse me...â
They both look at a woman that seemed to be as lost as they were âAre you heading to the meeting?â They both nod speechless and embarrassed, they were just talking about weird stuff Jimâs nights had brought.
âOh-my-God⊠James T?â she asks in shock.
Jim stares at her and a smile emerges from his face as he recognized the woman in front of him âBy the stars! If it isnât Y/N⊠How have you been, little girl?â
âItâs been great! Finally joined the Fleet again, getting better from the accident...â She seems clumsy and not used to talk to people âDo you mind if i join you? Iâm kinda lost here⊠couldnât find anyone I knowâ
Jim smiles as he gives his arm for her to grab on âSure, we will be more than pleased! Bones, this is my friend Y/N from back Earth, we decide to join the Academy together when kids!â
âChief Medical Officer Leonard McCoy. Itâs a pleasure, miss.â He says avoiding looking at you, looking really nervous. His hair was messy, he smelled alcohol and he didnât even shaved that morning. Jim asks you âWhat ship are you on now, Y/N?â
âIâm from none actuallyâ you laughs âAfter the accident I go from ship to ship to maintain an order on the Federation rules, I study the crew behavior and search for procedures that may or may not be helpful for all vessels.â
âYouâre like a spy nowâŠ? Get off!â Jim chuckles.
âI just try to make everyoneâs life easier on missions.â
âYeah, wait until she meets our Green Goblin⊠filling our lives with a bunch of rules...â Bones seems to be on a bad mood, he looks stressed and anxious about something.
âYou got a goblin on your crew?â you joke around to see if he feels more comfortable on your presence. âWait! I think I know where we are!â you spot a sign pointing to the main hall and grabs both by the arms walking faster as you were all terribly late for the meeting.
The room was crowded. It would be disrespectful to pass in front of all those people since the meeting had already begun. You three tried to remain unnoticed at the back of the room listening all Admirals, engineers and strategist that talked about the new procedures of the Federation.
The meeting took hours, and Jim made some jokes every time he could. When it was over you were thankful for being the ones closest to the exit door. Jim offers you a drink to remember old times and since you had been a nice company all this time and helped them find the main hall before the meeting ended.
As you get to the pub nearby, you three sit on a round table. You and Jim get along pretty well, you had lot of stuff in common as those action movies you watched on your childhood and those spaceship adventure-games that made you sign into the Federation. Surprisingly for Bones, Jim wasnât hitting on you, everyone knew about Jim Kirkâs lady-killer fame built on the Academy. The moment he spots some pretty girl nearby he stands up, living you and the doctor alone for some time. He wasnât much of talking like your friend James, but you try a silly chat anyway.
âSo⊠about that âGoblinâ you said...â it was the only thing that came to your head at the time, you didnât talk much with Dr. McCoy by the few hours you spent together at the meeting.
âYeah, that half-Vulcan bastard. Keeps bossing us around as he got all answers of the universe behind those pointy earsâ he seemed more relaxed after Jim had left, holding that glass of whisky on his hand, but every time he talked, his eyes were pointing somewhere else then you.
You laugh as he seemed to do his first joke all night âAnd how is James as a Captain?â
âLove and hate at the same time with that guy. Sometime he freaks me out. Heâs stubborn, childish, irresponsible,â he drinks more as he continues â⊠Anyway, nobody is perfect⊠Heâs a great Captain⊠always thinking about his crew, risking his ass to protect the othersâŠ. but donât you dare tell Jim I said that to youâŠâ He gives you a deep look with his eyebrows up and a half smile on his mouth.
âItâs our secret!â you both salute with you glasses and drink some more as you see the Captain coming back to your table, his face is red with a mark of a lady palm on it. He didnât need to talk of what happened.
âI guess I should remember faces after talking to them again. This mark wonât help me this nightâ
"Nobody is perfect, I said..." Bones smiles at you and you both laugh with the joke only you could understand. Bones gets up to refresh his glass, leaving you and Jim alone for a while.
âSo, Y/N. I noticed the way Bones looks at you when nobody is watching...â the Captain was a bit drunk, but not that drunk. You laugh as he realized you were interested on McCoy.
âYeah, he seems to be a great guy. But I donât think he could be interest in a girl like me.â
âDonât you worry about that⊠and leave the magic to the Captain...â Jim words scared you a bit. What the hell was he going to do?
As Bones got back to the table, you blush a bit trying not to look at him so much.
Jim took a move to make things less weird as they were. âI received your message about the accident, but how did you get this job at the Federation? You never told me about it...â
âActually, as you might remember, I graduated as a main pilot being able to fly any Starships from the Federation. On one of my fist missions we had an unexpected hostile encounter with an unknown Vessel that attacked our ship, killed most of my crew. I was lucky to survive, but got a severe injury on my hand that didnât allow me to pilot a ship againâ You show one of your hands with some scars from the accident. The boys look sad as you talk. Suddenly, McCoy reaches your hand and look at it carefully, examining it.
âOh my God, Y/N. Does it still hurt? Were any fractures? Any rupture on the tendons?â he noticed his actions were a bit invasive, as your cheeks got hot red at the same time he touched you. He gently put your hand over the table again, trying not to act so weird. âSorry, darlinâ. Been awhile since Iâm off medbay⊠itâs freaking me outâ
âPlease, continueâ Jim asks holding a laugh. He noticed his friend had made a unusual move that night.
âSo⊠I began to analyze the situation carefully, and to think what went wrong and how to avoid it to happen to any other ship that encounter a situation like ours. I wrote a massive paper and sent it to the Federation Council, and they asked if i wanted the job. I accept it. End of story. Not all things are badâŠâ. You looked at McCoy as some words slipped from your mouth ââŠIf I was still a pilot I probably wouldnât have met you...â now you were sure it was the alcohol talking. You blush hoping he didnât hear what you just said.
âWell, darlinâ. Iâm amused by your optimism.â replied the doctor âIâm not stuck on that ship for my own plans as wellâ He finish his drink giving you a tender smile.
Time has passed and, unfortunately, it was time to go. You all had another meeting with the Federation Ambassadors by the morning. You three agreed to meet and go together to get there before it begins this time.
Next morning Kirk and McCoy were waiting for you by the main corridor entrance. You greet Jim and barely could look at Dr. McCoyâs eyes thinking if he knew how you felt for him. He was looking cute this morning. For sure he had shaved, brushed his hair right and he smelled like (one of your favorite perfumes). It only made harder for you not to smile while talking to him.
At the meeting hall, you sit next to Jim, explaining him the subtle changes on the regulations that he should remember as captain. From time to time you kept your eyes on McCoy, and notice he placed his eyes on you, but you were too embarrassed thinking if Jim told him about what you talked last night. The meeting was boring as hell, but needed. And, God, you were anxious for it to end. Time seemed not to pass and you were so nervous thinking about what you said to McCoy last night.
You all left the room by the end of the afternoon. You and the Doctor kept quiet, just smiling at each other as nothing had happened. âY/N, you and Bones wanna do something different tonight?â Jim asks with a big mean grin on his face.
You blush and try to change the subject for something more pleasant âSo, what about some Starship Commander III tonight? I away carry it on my PADD, if i get bored during missionâ you ask Jim, it was one of the movies you both watched when young.
âCanÂŽt believe you got this movie here!â Jim was shocked âOk! Weâll be there! 8pm, deal?â
