So I was thinking about my own fic, which has been going on for a couple years at this point. Specifically, a lot of the older scenes. I'm still happy with most of the fic, but there are parts I really wish I had done differently in hindsight, and that got me thinking-- is there anything in legacy whip that, after several years of working on this project, you wish you had done differently?
In short: YEP, but that's just an inevitable thing with the power of hindsight ahahah
One thing that still infamously haunts me is the execution of B1Ch11, not that it's a ~BAD~ chapter by any means, but it's absolutely the weakest one in the whole story and it's always been apparent (to me) auuuugh. As it's almost 100% a transitional chapter, I don't know what else i would have done with it. Literally the Garmadon and Nya scene was added just to give it some more heft and it STILL feels lacking dfgkjhgfdfgh
Another thing is the implementation of Jesse and Olivia's characters for Book 1- I wish I would've done more to ground Jesse (and Miranda's) backstory in during Garmadon's first attack rather than kind of slipping it in retroactively, but:
a) I didn't have Jesse's whole thing even sorted out at that point in time, let alone Miranda's existence, and
b) while I did know Jesse was going to be a significant character eventually, I wanted to at least keep the first book OC-free (ignoring the Olivia technicality) to demonstrate that I did/do have a proper understanding of the Ninjago world and its primary characters as a whole before shoveling in entirely new faces and making the *big* changes. Like building credibility before making a risky investment, in a sense lol. So either way, I wasn't going to muddy up the purity of the pilot's simple yet potent story with some random pink guy, but it probably would've made some of his later...spiels a little less out of nowhere, but nothing that can't be brushed over either dsfghjhgfd
Going back to Olivia- there's the fact that her overall character got spliced into who she is now + Bridget, which means her older scenes have her being a lot colder, more direct, and serious and less silly lmao than she is in more recent stuff, which is a liiiiiittle bit jarring when going back for another read through. I don't really know how I'd even theoretically go back to correct that, since there's no Bridget to offset the more stoic aspects I originally gave Olivia, plus as she IS the 'main threat' save for Garmadon she needed some of those aspects to BE a threat, especially since I was also building her from the ground up with nothing but scraps then ended up doing a u-turn once I gave her a full-on fight with Kai that changed my brain chemistry completely adfghjgf
Edit: ALSO I SHOULDVE GAVE HER MORE SCENES WITH NYA
For Book 2, there's nothing drastic I would point out as I am extremely overall proud with how it still holds up today, but I do believe that during the first half of the story I cut up some chapters in weird places where I probably shouldn't have (leading to some really strange cliffhangers in a few spots prior to the True Potential Arcs), which is why I'm such a stickler for NOT doing that in Book 3, because a chapter will end when and where it needs to end and word count will not stop me!!!
Anyway, in another five years, ask me again about Book 3 because I will be curious to know then too *-*
