Shadow of the Fox; Julie Kagawa

Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa is an enchanting YA novel that traverses Japanese mythology in an Odyssey-esque adventure. Yumeko is a kind troublemaker who has never left the monastery. Extra Ticket for BookCon For SALE

Hey, so a while back, my mother bought me a VIP ticket to BookCon (which my parents do every Xmas) and at the last BookCon I was part of a focus group where I received two BookCon tickets for a full weekend.

One of them, I gifted to my best friend for their bday.

The other one I am selling today, for $40 or your best offer. 

The value of a full weekend ticket (which are no longer available btw) is about $65, just so you know. I meant to give it to another friend, but they are working double shifts all that weekend so they are unable to come. 

The only real requirements (to make it easier for you) is that you must be in or near NYC, 18 years or older, and you have to meet me at the Javits Center so that I can hand off the pass to you. I have to be the one to pick it up because it’s my name on the registration, but the ticket will be given to you immediately.

Please let me know very soon (my DM’s are open to all) because the Convention is next weekend, the 2nd and 3rd of June, 2018.

BookCon 2018!!

I’m super hype to tell y’all that I’m going to BookCon this year for the very first time!! I only first heard of it last year, so I’m very excited to experience it all for the first time. I’ll be there on Sunday, but not Saturday, unfortunately. I don’t have my tickets yet, but I’m going to get them as soon as the full schedule is up on the website.

For the last few years that I’ve attended Book Con, I feel like it’s become the more relaxing of the two events (between this and Book Expo). Granted, we’re always running around during Book Expo trying to get everything we want done before it’s over (two days is really not enough, I just want a full week of bookish goodness, especially since I live so close so it wouldn’t be awful for me to travel).

I do want to stress that this event is a different experience for everyone. For some people, it’s about meeting authors and getting their favorite book signed. For others, it’s about scoring some free or lower-priced books. And of course, there are people who just want to come and hang out with other book lovers.

My experience was just a little bit of all three. Like I said, since we got a lot of what wanted done and had seen the convention center for two days straight, we weren’t surprised by anything new (although, I’m always in awe of the architecture there - it’s pretty phenomenal and enormous).

Saturday began so leisurely for us. We wanted to get in line to see Kevin Kwan (and this was before the movie came out so I didn’t know how much I would treasure my signed copy) and get a copy of his highly acclaimed Crazy Rich Asians. I feel like Penguin really had a good handle this year on lines (with one slight exception when it came to a mystery drop - Four Dead Queens). Despite the hoards of readers, I think most publishers have made great strides in line control since past years.

I was set on not arriving too early, but I knew I had to get there to get tickets for autographs. I’d picked up one for Marie Lu and one for Marissa Meyer during the weekend and I remember how much I was dreading bringing all my Marissa Meyer books and trekking with them around all day. I’d gotten into The Lunar Chronicles a little later than most people did so I never got a chance to get ALL of my books signed by her, but since I had Kristen there with me, I was able to get ALL of my books signed (10+) so all my gratitude goes to her. All the authors, but especially Marissa, were absolutely lovely human beings who were incredibly kind and charming.

I do appreciate that all the author signings (for the most part) are ticketed because it means people can spend time walking around and finding new reads and making new connections rather than waiting in a line two-three hours before a signing starts. I always get disappointed seeing those lines and realizing these people could be doing a lot more with their experience here. Obviously, people do line up at an ungodly hour in the mornings before Book Con starts to score their tickets, I still think it makes a difference.

That all being said, while Book Expo always tries to concentrate on all age groups of books, Book Con always seems to focus on young adult content. Now if you have not ventured into the world of YA books, then you probably don’t know how intense it can get when it comes to highly anticipated books. I want to say that Book Con was 85%-90% young adult which means that people were ready to wait on the long lines. If there’s one thing to admire about young readers is that they have the stamina and determination to wait for their favorite authors and books. I don’t know if I really have it in me anymore (who am I kidding, I will wait for days if it meant getting my hands one a coveted novel).

My favorite parts of these sort of events is that you get to hear what people are reading and what they’re excited for. The demographics for Book Con always screw way younger than they do at Book Expo (since it is, for the most part, bookish professionals) and I think it’s always refreshing to see what’s doing well and what’s hot and upcoming in the world of books. Plus, I think the people are a little more unpredictable (which you can take with a grain of salt).

Kristen and I were determined to have a lax time at Book Con. After two full days of walking around and hefting books home, we just wanted some down time to soak it in at a consumer level. I got to see glimpses of some of my favorite authors like Mary HK Choi, Jenny Han (can you see a pattern of Asian author love here?), and Jason Reynolds (-swoons-). We definitely didn’t bring as much bounty home as we did for Book Expo or even compared to years before. I think we’ve done a good job in taming our need to take every book that we can when we can. Besides, if you take a book that you’re not going to read (and is free), that’s just disappointing a reader (and the publisher/author) who may have really wanted it and couldn’t receive it. We’re not about that mood.

Of course, here are my tips in case you ever get the chance to attend:

Be nice and polite.

Be patient and never physically invade anyone else’s space.

Be humble to others, even if they aren’t back (trust me, authors/artists/publishers/professionals always remember).

Don’t take books you’re not going to read just because someone was handing them out (read the synopsis! If you find that it’s not your thing, just hand it back and say “No, thank you.”

Bring sustenance (lots of fluids and snacks).

Don’t be petty or act unforgivingly if something doesn’t happen for you - there will always be opportunities in the future.

Make friends!

Relax and remember that this is supposed to be fun.
